The Ministry of Defence plans to sign a contract to buy 12 military fighter jets from China, with the option to purchase 36 more at a later date.
In a major deal, the ministry confirmed it was in talks to secure the L-15 Falcon - described as a training and light attack aircraft - from China National Aero-Technology Import & Export Corporation (CATIC).
Tareq Al Hosani, chief executive of Tawazun Economic Council, said the deal is part of continuing efforts to diversify and modernise capabilities of the Air Force and units of the armed forces.
“We have reached the final stage in our talks with the Chinese side. The final contract will be signed soon,” he said in a statement.
“We trust that CATIC has advanced technology that enjoys global competitive advantages.”
No value of the deal was released but China sells the twin-seat L-15 Falcon for $10 million to $15 million per unit, industry reports said.

If the L-15 acquisition reaches fruition, it will signal the end of a long-running saga to provide a new advanced trainer for the UAE Air Force and Air Defense.
In 2009 the UAE announced that it had selected the Aermacchi (now Leonardo) M-346 to answer a requirement for 24 standard advanced trainers and a similar number of armed light attack/lead-in fighter trainers.
By the following year the requirement had slimmed down to 20 of each variant, but the deal foundered.
In the ensuing period, the UAE was linked with a number of trainer types, notably the KAI T-50, but continued to operate its BAE Systems Hawks until they were recently withdrawn.

Un funzionario della Difesa degli Emirati Arabi Uniti ha confermato che una nuova flotta di jet da addestramento avanzati L-15 di fabbricazione cinese diventerà il nuovo supporto per la pattuglia acrobatica dell'Aeronautica Militare degli Emirati Arabi Uniti (EAU).
Il colonnello Saeed Al-Ghawi, portavoce ufficiale del Dubai Airshow presso il Ministero della Difesa degli Emirati Arabi Uniti, ha dichiarato a "ShowNews" il 15 Novembre scorso che 12 L-15 erano stati acquistati in sostituzione dei Leonardo/Aermacchi MB-339 attualmente utilizzati dalla pattuglia acrobatica "Fursan Al Emarat".
Non ha potuto, tuttavia, confermare quando l'aereo sarebbe stato consegnato o se il nuovo velivolo sarebbe stato disponibile per equipaggiare la pattuglia acrobatica in tempo per il prossimo Dubai Airshow, previsto per il 2025.
