Qualche ipotesi sulla possibile sorte dell'ultimo rimasto .....
..... Canada has claimed one while Australia has claimed two.
There is an unnamed Middle Eastern customer, speculated to be Kuwait, which has also procured two. Combined with the four sales to Qatar, that means only one C-17 is left.
Just where that one will go remains unknown, but there has been reported interest from India, which has so far received seven of its 10 ordered planes.
The UK also reportedly has shown interest in adding to its fleet in the past.
New Zealand, which is seeking to replace its aging Hercules transport fleet, has been suggested as an option, but the fact that only one C-17 remains makes such a move unlikely.

India Eyes the Last Globemaster Slice .....

Arie Church (08/21/2015)

The Indian Air Force is seeking to purchase Boeing's last unspoken for C-17 Globemaster III after Qatar sealed a deal to snap-up four of the remaining five aircraft back in June, India's Economic Times reported .....
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/new ... 506624.cms
India ordered a total of 10 C-17s back in 2011, and has used the aircraft heavily enough, especially in humanitarian relief operations, that the IAF would ideally like up to three additional airframes, according to the report.
Since Boeing is shuttering its assembly line at Long Beach, Calif., any additional airframes for the IAF would depend on current customers, such as Australia or Qatar, canceling or curtailing their order, or a current operator selling aircraft second-hand.
India initially envisioned acquiring a fleet of up to 18 Globemasters in tandem with its newly built Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules.

Last Aussie Globemaster Delivered .....

Arie Church (11/9/2015)

Boeing delivered the Royal Australian Air Force's eighth and final C-17 Globemaster III to the fleet's base at RAAF Amberley, near Brisbane, Nov. 4, the Defense Ministry announced. (1)
Australia's C-17s have been heavily engaged "supporting the international effort to combat Daesh in Iraq and Syria," as well as providing humanitarian and disaster relief, defense materiel minister Mal Brough said in the release. (2)
Australia originally purchased six C-17s, and snapped up its seventh and eighth aircraft from Boeing's final, non-contracted production stock earlier this year.
India expressed interest in the last unsold C-17 after Qatar claimed one of the two still available after Boeing shuttered the production line at Palm Beach, Calif. (3)
The RAAF also operates the C-130J Super Hercules in the tactical airlift role, and is acquiring 10 C-27J Spartans for mid-range and short-field operations, according to the RAAF. (4)

Prima missione in Antartico per un C-17A della RAAF .....
Dipping a Toe into Antarctic Airspace .....

Arie Church (11/30/2015)

The Royal Australian Air Force recently flew a C-17 Globemaster III on an experimental resupply flight to Antarctica for the first time, RAAF officials announced.
"Whilst this is a first for the Royal Australian Air Force, other countries, including the United States, regularly use military assets to assist with Antarctic logistics and I am confident Australia can do the same," Australia's environment minister Greg Hunt (1) said in a RAAF release (2).
The RAAF conducted its first Antarctic C-17 mission from Hobart, Tasmania, to Wilkins Aerodrome, near the Australian Antarctic program's base.
Air Force C-17s have supported the United States' National Science Foundation research at McMurdo Station for several years, and most recently began year-round operations using night vision goggles (3).
The Australian government will review the results of the mission to determine whether to normalize C-17 Antarctic resupply.

Two C-17s drop-launched a pair of ballistic target missiles near Wake Island in the Pacific Ocean, supporting a recent Missile Defense Agency test.
"High-altitude, heavy weight airdrop is something we're doing a lot of here at Edwards, supporting not only MDA, but NASA with the Orion capsule drops that we've been doing," 418th Flight Test Squadron pilot Capt. Stephen Koether from Edwards AFB, Calif., said in a Dec. 7 release .....

Edwards pilots initially deployed a Short-Range Air-Launch Target (SRALT) from the C-17's cargo bay, which was detected, tracked, and intercepted by a ground-launched Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile.
The second Globemaster launched a larger Extended Medium-Range Ballistic Missile (EMRBM) minutes later, testing defensive systems' ability to discriminate targets through debris from the first shot.
The THAAD system on Wake successfully intercepted the first shot, and although the AEGIS destroyer USS John Paul Jones was able to track the EMRBM, its SM-3 missile failed to engage, according to an MDA release .....

Pratt to Deliver Final C-17 Engine .....

Brian Everstine (1/13/2016)

Pratt & Whitney on Jan. 12 marked the end of production of the F117 engine, which powers the C-17 Globemaster III, with a ceremony preceding delivery of the final power plant to the Air Force this month.
The engine is the last of 1,313 the company has produced for USAF and through foreign military sales since the C-17 entered service in 1993.
“There is a great sense of fulfillment and, yes too, a sense of sadness,” said Bennett Croswell, president of Pratt’s military engines division, in a Jan. 12 ceremony at a company facility in Middletown, Conn.
“Because it really is bittersweet to be handing over the final F117 engine today. … This is as successful and important a program as we’ve ever had here at military engines from both a production and a sustainment perspective,” Croswell said.
Brig. Gen Stacey Hawkins, director of logistics, engineering, and force protection for Air Mobility Command,
http://www.af.mil/AboutUs/Biographies/D ... wkins.aspx
said the engine has been vital to the rapid global mobility mission handled by the C-17, which he called “a workhorse of global mobility.”
Since the aircraft first flew for the service, it has totaled 2.3 billion flight hours, setting 33 airlift records.
“This engine is vital to our national security by defeating and deterring our enemies and by saving the lives of those who have been persecuted or in need of help,” Hawkins said at the ceremony.

Il (lungo) futuro del Globemaster III ..... ne parla il generale Everhart nel Daily Report dell'AFA .....
Long Live the C-17 ..... John A. Tirpak (9/21/2016)

Though Air Mobility Command is already looking ahead to a stealthy penetrating tanker in the 2035 timeframe, a new airlifter to replace the C-17 will be longer in coming, AMC chief Gen. Carlton Everhart told reporters at ASC16.
The C-17, he said, has a lot of life left in it, though fleet improvements will likely come in the form of a new head-up display, a new oxygen generating system and putting extended range fuel tanks on those C-17s that don’t already have them.
Everhart said the C-17 “drinks a lot of gas” and may benefit from a re-engining at some point, and he expects there will be a service life extension program, but it will probably be done incrementally when the jets come in for depot maintenance.
Applying “fleet dynamics” - swapping aircraft out of high-corrosion environments like the Pacific and making sure the fleet ages evenly by tail number - will buy as much as ten years of service life, Everhart said.
The C-17 could be a “60-80-year airplane,” Everhart said.
Asked about when a “C-X” might be in the offing, he suggested that something smaller and stealthy might come sooner.

The dolphins were moved to NAS Key West in March where they spent the last month before returning to San Diego.
“The dolphins need to be challenged and get experience in different waters,” said Brit Swenberg, an NMMP biological technician.
“It also gets them used to traveling and working out of deployable vehicles.”

Un Globemaster III tutto ..... rosa ..... :bunny:
Maybe Lt. Col. Erik Fisher said it best in an open letter to his young daughter, Ella.
The 21st Airlift Squadron commander was explaining why his squadron put together an all-woman crew to fly a mission across the Pacific to Australia earlier this month to honor Women’s History Month.
“We did this to honor our past and recognize the service of women today,” Fisher wrote.
“We also did it for you. We did it for the other 7-year-old girls in your first-grade class and all the young girls who will lead our country in the future.”
It is a sentiment that the seven women who flew the C-17 jet transport would agree with.

Chi acquisterà le officine dove Boeing ha prodotto, per anni, i C-17 ?
Boeing is looking to sell the facilities in Long Beach, California where it built the C-17A Globemaster III cargo aircraft.
This will bring a more definitive end to the company’s serial production of military aircraft in Southern California and makes it even less likely that it would restart production of the airlifters in response to emerging U.S. Air Force demands.
At the same time, that space could be very attractive to up-and-coming space launch firms, such as Virgin Orbit or SpaceX, who might be looking to expand their operations and there have also been proposals for a more dramatic overhaul of the area.
The Chicago-headquartered plane maker put the property on the market with the help of real estate brokerage NKF Capital Markets on Nov. 5, 2018.
The nearly four million square foot plot of land adjacent to Long Beach Airport includes the 1.1 million square foot main assembly building where workers built just shy of 280 C-17s for the U.S. Air Force and more than a half dozen foreign customers.
So far, there is no public asking price for the property.
