Boeing's board of directors has stripped the board chair role from chief executive Dennis Muilenburg, a move the company says will enable Muilenburg to focus on running the crisis-wracked company.
It has appointed nine-year director David Calhoun, a Blackstone Group executive and former General Elective executive, as board chair.
The move comes amid industry speculation that Boeing might shake up its senior management team as it works to recover from the 737 Max crisis.

Parla 'Sully' ...
In “What Really Brought Down the Boeing 737 MAX?William Langewiesche draws the conclusion that the pilots are primarily to blame for the fatal crashes of Lion Air 610 and Ethiopian 302 (*).
In resurrecting this age-old aviation canard, Langewiesche minimizes the fatal design flaws and certification failures that precipitated those tragedies, and still pose a threat to the flying public.
I have long stated, as he does note, that pilots must be capable of absolute mastery of the aircraft and the situation at all times, a concept pilots call airmanship.
Inadequate pilot training and insufficient pilot experience are problems worldwide, but they do not excuse the fatally flawed design of the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) that was a death trap.

Interessante articolo....soprattutto in questi due passaggi:

As one of the few pilots who have lived to tell about being in the left seat of an airliner when things went horribly wrong, with seconds to react, I know a thing or two about overcoming an unimagined crisis.

These emergencies did not present as a classic runaway stabilizer problem, but initially as ambiguous unreliable airspeed and altitude situations, masking MCAS.

Another indicated that the Boeing employees misled the Federal Aviation Administration.
“So I basically lied to the regulators (unknowingly),” read one message.
“It wasnt a lie, no one told us that was the case,” came the response.
Boeing did not turn the messages over to the FAA until Thursday, federal officials said Friday.
The FAA said in a statement (*) that it “finds the substance of the document concerning.
The FAA is also disappointed that Boeing did not bring this document to our attention immediately upon its discovery.”
FAA administrator Steve Dickson said in a letter to Boeing Friday: “I expect your explanation immediately.”

Resistere! Resistere! Resistere!
Boeing chief executive Dennis Muilenburg says he has no plans to resign his post despite widespread speculation that his days atop the world's largest aerospace company are numbered due to the ever-deepening 737 Max crisis.
The Boeing chief told House lawmakers on 30 October that he does not intend to step down because he feels responsible to lead the company through the 737 Max troubles.
The issue of Muilenburg's future with Boeing arose while he testified before the House transportation committee, which is investigating the certification and development of the 737 Max.
"Are you going to be stepping down as the CEO of Boeing?" Florida lawmaker Debbie Mucarsel-Powell asked Muilenburg.
"Congresswoman, no," the Boeing chief replied.

This report concludes the U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure’s 18- month long investigation of the design, development, and certification of the 737 MAX aircraft, and related matters. The Committee’s investigation has revealed multiple missed opportunities that could have turned the trajectory of the MAX’s design and development toward a safer course due to flawed technical design criteria, faulty assumptions about pilot response times, and production pressures. The FAA also missed its own opportunities to change the direction of the 737 MAX based on its aviation safety mission. Boeing failed in its design and development of the MAX, and the FAA failed in its oversight of Boeing and its certification of the aircraft.
At the direction of Committee Chair Peter DeFazio and Subcommittee on Aviation Chair Rick Larsen, this report is being released to help inform the public’s understanding of what went so horrifically wrong and why. Despite the sweeping and substantive problems that have been identified by this Committee’s investigation as well as various other investigations, both Boeing and the FAA have suggested that the certification of the 737 MAX was compliant with FAA regulations. The fact that a compliant airplane suffered from two deadly crashes in less than five months is clear evidence that the current regulatory system is fundamentally flawed and needs to be repaired.

With respect to the cause of the crash the NTSB commented:
We agree that the uncommanded nose-down inputs from the airplane’s MCAS system should be part of the probable cause for this accident. However, the draft probable cause indicates that the MCAS alone caused the airplane to be “unrecoverable,” and we believe that the probable cause also needs to acknowledge that appropriate crew management of the event, per the procedures that existed at the time, would have allowed the crew to recover the airplane even when faced with the uncommanded nose-down inputs.

Ps

----------------------------------------------------

[...] According to what I've read, the proposal is that a third AOA source (probably rather than another physical sensor) be a mandatory retrofit to the entire MAX fleet. As it currently stands, EASA would require the 3rd AOA source, but other authorities haven't mandated it.

DR - I think the MAX 7 is appealing to current MAX operators that want something a little smaller,
but don't want to add another type (e.g. the A220) to their fleet.
I keep hearing that Southwest really wants them for their lighter routes. Southwest currently has a huge fleet of 737-700s.
If that market is large enough to justify the expense of development/cert is a different question. Certainly it wouldn't justify a multi-Billion dollar effort to update the flight deck (especially since it would adversely affect the common type rating)...

Ps.

https://bea.aero/en/investigation-repor ... -ethiopia/

(le osservazioni si trovano sotto "BEA Comments").

"The BEA considers that the operational and crew performance aspects are insufficiently addressed in the EAIB final report, in particular with regard to the sequence of events that occurred before the activation of the 1st MCAS. Consequently this prevents the reader from having a precise and complete understanding of the event.

Shortcomings relating to the crew’s actions, particularly in the first phase of the flight, is not accompanied by a thorough analysis of the reasons for the behaviours observed, in relation with their training, their experience and the company organization with regard to the training and knowledge acquisition principles".
