Chiunque avesse detto, qualche anno fa, che il 747-8 sarebbe entrato in servizio prima del 787, avrebbe certamente ricevuto degli sguardi compassionevoli da parte dei propri interlocutori......

Boeing set to deliver new 747-8 freighter within 2 weeks
By Dominic Gates
Seattle Times aerospace reporter
Boeing will deliver its first new 747-8 jumbo freighter around Oct. 12 after resolving a financial squabble between initial customer Cargolux and engine supplier GE, a board member for the carrier said Friday.
Boeing has resolved the financial squabble that delayed the first delivery of its 747-8 freighter, and launch customer Cargolux will take the new jumbo jet "around Oct. 12," a board member for the carrier said Friday.
Akbar Al Baker, the chief executive of Qatar Airways and a director of Cargolux, said at a press conference in Everett that the dispute that held up delivery was not with Boeing but with GE, which makes the 747-8 engines.
Qatar Airways has owned 35 percent of Cargolux since this summer, giving the Gulf carrier heavy influence over the European air cargo hauler. Al Baker was visiting Everett for a long-planned celebration of Boeing's delivery of a 777-200LR to the Gulf airline.
The first two 747-8 freighters were set to be delivered to air freight carrier Cargolux of Luxembourg Sept. 19, but the big celebration was canceled three days beforehand, after Al Baker and two other Qatar representatives joined the Cargolux board and rejected the deliveries due to "unresolved contractual issues."
Al-Baker said Cargolux previously hadn't negotiated adequate compensation for a 2.7 percent shortfall in the promised fuel efficency of the GE engines.
"Unfortunately, the management of Cargolux did not take the action they should have taken," Al Baker said. "As we sit on the board (of Cargolux), we have a full right to object if we find something that isn't fair. That's all we did."
The dispute involved compensation for a 2.7 percent shortfall in the promised fuel efficiency of the jet's initial GE engines, Al Baker said.
"The engine is under-performing," Al Baker said. "The issue was very strongly raised and was negotiated by the board of Cargolux. They had to comply."
Al Baker declined to give details on how the issue was resolved.
GE spokeswoman Deb Case said last week the engine-maker is designing a "performance improvement package" that is expected to be ready for engines installed from late 2013 onward. But all 747-8s built before then will have the fuel-efficiency shortfall.
Those issues had been known for many months, but the question of compensation was re-opened again after Al Baker joined the board.
The event to celebrate delivery of Qatar's 777 — the 100th airliner, including both Airbus and Boeing jets, to join the Gulf carrier's fleet — was originally scheduled for Friday morning, but at the last minute was pushed into the afternoon.
Boeing said this was due to "technical difficulties with the airplane."
Al Baker has a well-earned reputation for upsetting every major aircraft manufacturer with last-minute shifts of direction that are usually resolved through financial compensation.
At the Paris Air Show in 2009, he lashed into Boeing, threatening to cancel his order for 30 Dreamliners and complaining publicly that the company was run by "bean counters and lawyers."
At this year's Paris Air Show, he said all that had been resolved.
At the 2010 Farnborough Air Show in London, he let down Bombardier, which had expected a big boost to its new CSeries jet program with a key order from Qatar. Al Baker backed away when engine-maker Pratt & Whitney wouldn't provide the maintenance cost guarantees he wanted for that jet's new geared turbofan engine.
He said Friday in Everett that a CSeries order may be reconsidered later but is not now under active discussion.
In Paris this year, he spoke out against Airbus for its decision to delay its proposed A350-1000 by two years and to modify the design with a new Rolls-Royce.
He called the European planemaker's rationale for the shift "garbage," and hinted that Qatar, the A350-1000 launch customer, might look to Boeing's 777 instead. Then, after saying at the Air Show that he would nevertheless order some Airbus jets, he left Paris without doing so.
On Friday in Everett, he said that he has in fact ordered some additional A380 superjumbo jets, but that the number will not be announced until the Dubai Air Show in November.
But he reiterated his disatisfaction with the A350-1000.
"We do not feel that airplane will do what it is supposed to do," he said.
That's good news for Boeing, which is planning an upgrade to its 777, dubbed 777X, to fend off possible competition from the Airbus jet.
Al Baker said Qatar will closely study whatever design Boeing comes up with.
"We will wait to see," he said. "We have absolute confidence in Boeing and its fine aircraft and of course we will be interested."
The 777 Al-Baker took Friday is the airline's 27th and it has 13 more on order.
Following the delivery of its new Dreamliner this week, Boeing executives will be greatly relieved to finally get their new jumbo jet delivered too.
After Cargolux's postponement of the first deliveries, the 747-8 was further set back a week later when Atlas Airways outright canceled three of its 12 orders for the new jet, citing "performance considerations" on the early planes off the production line.
But Atlas said it will still take three deliveries of other 747-8s this year, and Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific should also take some by year end. Now Cargolux is back on the list to join them.
