Sulla strada per "Glenelg" .....

View on the Way to 'Glenelg' .....

This 360-degree panorama from NASA's Mars rover Curiosity shows the rocky terrain surrounding it as of its 55th Martian day, or sol, of the mission (Oct. 1, 2012).
The base of Mount Sharp can be seen at upper left.

The sandy area seen to the right is a region called "Rocknest," which is the current candidate for Curiosity's first scooping experiments on Mars.

This image was taken by the rover's Navigation camera.

"Rocknest" .....

Immagine
'Rocknest' From Sol 52 Location .....

This patch of windblown sand and dust downhill from a cluster of dark rocks is the "Rocknest" site, which has been selected as the likely location for first use of the scoop on the arm of NASA's Mars rover Curiosity.
This view is a mosaic of images taken by the telephoto right-eye camera of the Mast Camera (Mastcam) during the 52nd Martian day, or sol, of the mission (Sept. 28, 2012), four sols before the rover arrived at Rocknest.
The Rocknest patch is about 8 feet by 16 feet (1.5 meters by 5 meters).

Scientists white-balanced the color in this view to show the Martian scene as it would appear under the lighting conditions we have on Earth, which helps in analyzing the terrain.

Panorama .....

Immagine
Panoramic View From 'Rocknest' Position of Curiosity Mars Rover .....

This panorama is a mosaic of images taken by the Mast Camera (Mastcam) on the NASA Mars rover Curiosity while the rover was working at a site called "Rocknest" in October and November 2012.

The center of the scene, looking eastward from Rocknest, includes the Point Lake area.
After the component images for this scene were taken, Curiosity drove 83 feet (25.3 meters) on Nov. 18 from Rocknest to Point Lake.
From Point Lake, the Mastcam is taking images for another detailed panoramic view of the area further east to help researchers identify candidate targets for the rover's first drilling into a rock.

The image has been white-balanced to show what the rocks and soils in it would look like if they were on Earth.

NASA Backs Off on Mars 'Historic Announcement' .....

An "historic" discovery made by NASA's Mars rover was teased by the space agency, but just when space enthusiasts were getting excited, NASA backpedaled, saying that the discovery won't be earthshaking, but it will be interesting. It may be a case of once bitten twice shy as NASA has been through this sort of "big discovery" before.

NASA denies rumours from Curiosity discovery .....

NASA is attempting to backtrack quickly after an earlier statement that the Mars Curiosity rover had recorded data from soil samples that were destined “for the history books.”
Initially, NASA spokesperson Guy Webster downplayed this suggestion and stated, “It won't be earthshaking but it will be interesting.”
Now NASA is saying, “Rumors and speculation that there are major new findings from the mission at this early stage are incorrect."

Immagine
Curiosity Self-Portrait, Wide View .....

On the 84th and 85th Martian days of the NASA Mars rover Curiosity's mission on Mars (Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, 2012), NASA's Curiosity rover used the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) to capture dozens of high-resolution images to be combined into self-portrait images of the rover.

The mosaic shows the rover at "Rocknest," the spot in Gale Crater where the mission's first scoop sampling took place. Four scoop scars can be seen in the regolith in front of the rover. A fifth scoop was collected later.

Self-portraits like this one document the state of the rover and allow mission engineers to track changes over time, such as dust accumulation and wheel wear. Due to its location on the end of the robotic arm, only MAHLI (among the rover's 17 cameras) is able to image some parts of the craft, including the port-side wheels.

This movie, based on images taken by ESA’s Mars Express, showcases the 82 km wide Korolev crater on Mars.
Located in the northern lowlands of the Red Planet, south of the large Olympia Undae dune field that partly surrounds Mars’ north polar cap, this well-preserved impact crater is filled with water ice all year round.
