E.T. ... telefono casa ... :cell_ring:
Webb is due to launch on an Ariane 5 rocket from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana, at the earliest on 24 December.
It will journey on a direct escape trajectory towards its target orbit more than 1.5 million kilometres from Earth.
Part of ESA’s Estrack cooperative network, the 10-metre antenna in Malindi, Kenya, will make first contact from the ground with the fledgling mission, with the all-important ‘first acquisition of signal’.
Webb’s first ‘message’ home will appear as a peak in radio waves on a monitor at the Malindi Ground Station – Webb’s first ‘words’.
Such signals are our only means of sending commands and bringing data home.
After this initial signal, a flood of information becomes available, informing operators of the spacecraft’s health after the rigours of launch and opening a gateway for ESA’s team at the Agency’s Operation’s Centre in Germany and the Italian Space Agency (ASI) team at Malindi to relay commands and vital mission information to NASA’s Webb Mission Control.

Incapsulato !!!
On Friday 17 December, the Ariane 5 rocket fairing was closed around the James Webb Space Telescope.
This protective fairing, or ‘nose cone’, will shield the telescope during liftoff and its journey through the atmosphere on 24 December.
Earlier this week, Webb was placed on top of Ariane 5 and a protective ‘shower curtain’ was put up to avoid any contamination.
On the day of encapsulation in the fairing, a protective cover on top of Webb was removed and the fairing was lowered down over the observatory and locked in place for liftoff.
This was a particularly delicate operation, assisted by a laser guiding system, because the margins between the folded up observatory (4.5 m wide) and the rocket fairing (5.4 m wide) are small.

Un commento di Jeff Foust ...
It’s finally here.
A wait once measured in years and months is now best calibrated in days, a moment many in the space community wondered would ever arrive.
On Friday morning - yes, Christmas Eve - at 7:20 am EST, an Ariane 5 is scheduled to lift off from Kourou, French Guiana, carrying the most valuable payload in that rocket’s quarter-century history, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).
A $10 billion mission decades in the making, and delayed by many years, will get off the ground at last.
The launch of JWST has been for years largely an abstract concept: a long-term goal, but one many years away, and slipping to the right.
The focus had been on the potential of the space telescope to revolutionize astronomy but also its development problems.
The launch itself seemed like a distant dream.

thespacereview.comFor JWST, the launch is only the beginning of the drama

On Thursday 23 December, the James Webb Space Telescope, safely stowed inside the fairing of ESA’s Ariane 5 launch vehicle, left the final assembly building for roll-out to the launch pad at Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana.
Webb, no longer in sight since its encapsulation in the fairing on 17 December, has been closely monitored.
The fairing is equipped with specialised environmental controls that keep the observatory in a perfectly controlled temperature and humidity range during its final few days on Earth.

After a successful launch of the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope on 25 December, and completion of two mid-course correction manoeuvres, the Webb team has analysed its initial trajectory and determined the observatory should have enough propellant to allow support of science operations in orbit for significantly more than a 10-year lifetime (the minimum baseline for the mission is five years).
Webb’s precise launch on an ESA-provided Ariane 5 rocket was performed by Arianespace on behalf of ESA from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana.
The analysis shows that less propellant than originally planned is needed to correct Webb’s trajectory toward its final orbit around the second Lagrange point known as L2, a point of gravitational balance on the far side of Earth away from the Sun.
Consequently, Webb will have much more than the baseline estimate of propellant – though many factors could ultimately affect Webb’s duration of operation.

The NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope team has fully deployed the spacecraft’s sunshield in space, a key milestone in preparing it for science operations.
The sunshield – about the size of a tennis court at full size – was folded to fit inside the Ariane 5 rocket’s nose cone prior to launch.
The Webb team began remotely deploying the sunshield on 28 December 2021, three days after launch. The five-layered sunshield will protect the telescope from the light and heat of the Sun, Earth, and Moon.

Webb, welcome home!” ...
Today, at 2 p.m. EST, Webb fired its onboard thrusters for nearly five minutes (297 seconds) to complete the final postlaunch course correction to Webb’s trajectory.
This mid-course correction burn inserted Webb toward its final orbit around the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point, or L2, nearly 1 million miles away from the Earth.
The final mid-course burn added only about 3.6 miles per hour (1.6 meters per second) – a mere walking pace – to Webb’s speed, which was all that was needed to send it to its preferred “halo” orbit around the L2 point.

Il telescopio spaziale James Webb ha subìto il primo impatto da parte di alcuni micromeoroidi ...
NASA’s next-generation space observatory has sustained its first noticeable micrometeoroid impact less than six months after launch, but the agency isn’t too concerned.
The James Webb Space Telescope, also known as Webb or JWST, launched on Dec. 25, 2021.
It has spent the intervening months trekking out to its deep-space post and preparing for science observations, a complicated process that has gone remarkably smoothly; recently, NASA said it expects to unveil the first science-quality images from the telescope on July 12.
Now, the agency announced on Wednesday that the observatory has experienced its first few impacts from tiny pieces of space debris called micrometeoroids.
But don’t panic: Neither the observatory’s schedule nor its scientific legacy is expected to suffer.
