The Boeing share fell 3.42 % to $85.60 on the New York Stock Exchange yesterday, following a negative recommendation from Wachovia Capital Markets, which said it feared the 787 programme would fall behind schedule by three to six months. "The progress of the 787 programme still worries us. If Boeing was forced to announce new cost overruns or a delivery delay, which we deem probable, we judge that this would put the share price under pressure", analysts at the bank said in a memo. They explained that "the contacts we have within Boeing's supply chain feed our concern". Wachovia's analysts concluded that the increase in R&D spending announced by Boeing last October was in fact aimed at helping two main suppliers -Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the Japanese company that builds the 787's wings, and Italy's Alenia (central fuselage)- catch up their own delays. The AFP recalls that Boeing lifted its R&D spending previsions for 2006 and 2007 in order to deal with "pressures" on the Dreamliner programme related to "weight and coordination with suppliers". Besides, the analysts wrote in their memo that they had learnt that "several client airlines in the Asia-Pacific region have been warned" of possible delays to the 787's delivery schedule. Boeing denied. AFP (22/01), Dow Jones News (22/01), Les Echos
