NATO Announces New Baltic Air Deployments .....

Marc V. Schanz (12/24/2014)

NATO announced the details of its upcoming Baltic Air Policing rotation, with two new NATO allies contributing fighter forces to the mission.

http://aco.nato.int/rotation-of-nato-ba ... erway.aspx

Italian Eurofighters will take on the lead policing element from Portuguese F-16s in the new year, said NATO's air component headquarters.
Polish MiG-29s will replace Canadian CF-18s at Šiauliai AB, Lithuania, and Spanish Eurofighters will take over from a German deployment of Eurofighters at Amari AB, Estonia.
Belgian F-16s will also relieve a Dutch F-16 deployment at Malbork, Poland.
The BAP mission, ongoing since 2004, provides air defense capability for Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
Thus far 14 NATO member states have participated in the mission—with the deployment of Italian and Spanish jets, the number rises to 16.
This past May, in the aftermath of the Ukraine crisis, NATO increased the number of fighters participating in the BAP mission, and Russian military activity in and around the Baltics has shown no sign of abating.
The 37th rotation will start in January following an official ceremony on Dec. 31.

Voci da oltreocèano .....
While the options for a Minuteman III replacement are still open, what is not debatable is the fact that Russia and China both see ICBMs as critical to their own security.
It is now time for the United States to do likewise.
When it comes to nuclear deterrence, symmetry of weapons plays an important role in stability.
We should not forget that.

Lo stato della forza .....

From left, a Peacekeeper ICBM, Minuteman III missile, and Minuteman I missile on display at the front gate of F.E. Warren AFB, Wyo., April 28, 2014.

The Air Force had 447 Minuteman III ICBMs on operational status in their silos, along with 10 B-2A stealth bombers and 77 B-52H bombers in deployed status as of Sept. 1, 2014, based on the counting rules used by the United States and Russia with the New START agreement, announced the State Department.

http://www.state.gov/documents/organization/235818.pdf

There were an additional 251 Minuteman missiles, 19 silos, 10 B-2s, and 12 B-52s in non-deployed status, according to the State Department's Jan. 1 release, which reflects that most recent biannual data exchange between the United States and Russia on each party's strategic nuclear arsenal.
Although the Air Force no longer operates the Peacekeeper ICBM, there are still 56 missiles of this type in non-deployed status, along with one launcher, that still count against the total number of strategic nuclear assets that the United States must declare.
Under New START, the United States and Russia must cap their respective strategic nuclear arsenals by February 2018 at no more than 1,550 deployed warheads, 700 deployed launchers (i.e., heavy bombers, ICBMs, and submarine-launched ballistic missiles), and 800 deployed and non-deployed launchers.
As of Sept. 1, 2014, the United States had 1,642 warheads, 794 deployed launchers, and 912 non-deployed launchers.
Russia had an arsenal of 1,643, 528, and 911, respectively.

Iskander SS-26 theater ballistic missile systems are also deploying in Russia’s Kaliningrad region, near the Baltic States.
The drills, according to Russian government and wire services, will last from March 16-21 and involve more than 100 aircraft, 15 submarines, 40 naval ships, and upwards of 76,000 personnel.
Adm. Cecil Haney, head of US Strategic Command, told the Senate Armed Services Committee Thursday the exercises are “very provocative” and are clearly intended to send a strong signal to the US and its allies, in combination with other activities, such as “significant” long-range bomber training, and their violation of the Intermediate Nuclear Forces treaty, “where Russia is trying to ascribe to be in terms of coercion” through use of their strategic forces.
In his opening remarks to the committee, Haney noted Russia is purposefully investing in its cyber and strategic forces, as well as counter-space programs.

Intanto sarebbe allo studio il nuovo PAK-TA trasporto strategico forse supersonico.

Minuteman Test Shot from Vandy .....

(3/24/2015)

Missileers launched an inert Minuteman III ICBM on a validation flight over the Pacific Ocean from Vandenberg AFB, Calif., on Monday, announced Air Force Global Strike Command.

http://www.afgsc.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123442530

A crew from the 90th Missile Wing at F.E. Warren AFB, Wyo., worked in tandem with Vandenberg's 576th Flight Test Squadron for the test mission.
"A lot of work and preparation goes in to an operational test launch from the teams on both bases," said 90th MW Task Force Commander Lt. Col Tytonia Moore.
"With these launches, we not only verify our processes and the ICBM weapon system, we provide a visual to the world that the Minuteman III is capable of striking pretty much anywhere with extreme precision," she added.
AFGSC conducts several of these test shots annually as part of its overall Minuteman III weapons system assurance testing.
The Air Force delayed the launch to allow airmen time to correct a telemetry link used for these test launches.
A Minuteman Double Shot .....

Arie Church (3/30/2015)

Air Force missileers conducted an exceptional second unarmed Minuteman III operational test launch in less than a week from Vandenberg AFB, Calif., March 27, Air Force Global Strike Command announced.

http://www.afgsc.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123443414

"These launches are a visible reminder to both our adversaries and our allies of the readiness and capability of the Minuteman III weapon system," Lt. Col. Daniel Hays, 341st Missile Wing task force commander from Malmstrom AFB, Mont., said in a release.
"Launching multiple missiles in close proximity to each other adds an extra amount of realism to the operational test mission we fulfill," he added.
AFGSC regularly launches several inert ICBMs a year as part of its operational assurance activities for the Minuteman III weapons system and actually has "two more launches scheduled for this fiscal year," AFGSC spokeswoman Capt. Michele Rollins told Air Force Magazine.
Staging launches close together also took advantage of in-place Navy range support and was "far more efficient" than one-off testing, she added.
Missileers from Malmstrom's 341st Missile Wing and Vandenberg's 576th Test Squadron conducted the March 27 launch.
A launch crew from F.E. Warren AFB, Wyo., fired the previous test shot from Vandenberg on March 23.

AFGSC Runs Simultaneous Bomber, ICBM Drills .....

Marc V. Schanz (4/1/2015)

The March 27 launch of an inert ICBM missile capped off three weeks of near-simultaneous operational testing of Air Force Global Strike Command’s Minuteman III fleet as well as its Air Launched Cruise Missile capabilities, according to a release .....

http://www.afgsc.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123443525

B-52s flying from Minot AFB, N.D., carried out three separate ALCM nuclear weapons system evaluation program test flights, in addition to the two ICBM test launches.
B-52 crews from Minot closely studied procedures for how to execute a standoff ALCM launch, prior to taking off.
Both the ICBM launches and the ALCM test flights followed a “cradle to grave” format, meaning the test incorporated all parts of a live mission personnel and crews could expect to perform in a real-world scenario, helping to validate the safety and reliability of the weapons prior to installing the test equipment, said SSgt. Aaron Ruan of the 705th Munitions Squadron at Minot.
AFGSC ran near-simultaneous ICBM and standoff testing events last September, as well.
Such testing is one way the command ensures both systems “meet reliability checks and operational standards,” said Maj. Gen. Michael Fortney, AFGSC’s director of operations .....

A Russia Su-27 jet fighter flew dangerously close and nearly collided with a U.S. reconnaissance aircraft this week in the latest aerial provocation by Moscow, defense officials revealed to the Washington Free Beacon.
The Su-27 conducted the close-in intercept of an RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft in international airspace over the Baltic Sea on Tuesday, said officials.
The incident prompted a diplomatic protest.

Quanta tensione, quanti rischi inutili.

The Sukhoi Su-27 dispatched to intercept the target identified it as a US Air Force reconnaissance aircraft RC-135U and reported the aircraft’s type and tail number to headquarters.
After the Su-27 made several fly-bys around the spy plane, the RC-135U altered course and moved away from Russian border.
