Ahi ahi ahi ..... non è che, a bordo della Wasp, le cose siano andate poi tanto lisce .....
The Marine Corps’ version of Lockheed Martin Corp.’s F-35 fighter demonstrated poor reliability in a 12-day exercise at sea, according to the U.S. military’s top testing officer.
Six F-35Bs, the most complex version of the Pentagon’s costliest weapons system, were available for flights only half of the time needed, Michael Gilmore, the Defense Department’s director of operational testing, said in a memo obtained by Bloomberg News.
A Marine Corps spokesman said the readiness rate was more than 65 percent.

negli anni 50 questo F35 avrebbe meritato il nobile titolo di " secchio di bulloni " dai collaudatori della Edwards ed inviato prontamente alla demolizione con un rapporto finale che avrebbe recitato più o meno così " this rubbish can't fly . "

F-35B, IOC & cose varie ..... il punto di vista del 'Daily Report' dell' AFA .....
Marines Declare F-35B IOC .....

John A. Tirpak (08/3/2015)

Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Joseph Dunford declared initial operational capability with the F-35B Friday afternoon, just making the July 2015 plan for declaration, set just over two years ago.
In a statement .....
http://www.marines.mil/News/NewsDisplay ... ional.aspx
..... Dunford, who was just confirmed to be the next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said he was “pleased to announce” that Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121 at MCAS Yuma, Ariz., has met the conditions required for IOC.
That means 10 aircraft in the 2B software configuration, with “the requisite performance envelope and weapons clearances, to include the training, sustainment capabilities, and infrastructure to deploy to an austere site or ship.”
The F-35B, he said, is capable of “conducting close air support, offensive and defensive counterair, air interdiction, assault escort support, and armed reconnaissance” as part of a Marine Air-Ground Task Force or in support of a joint force.
Dunford noted a recent seven-week, at-sea series of tests with the aircraft, during which the F-35 “participated in multiple large-force exercises” and delivered live ordnance.
In addition, the unit passed an operational readiness inspection last week.
He said USMC has “trained and qualified” 50 pilots and certified “about 500 maintainers” capable of “autonomous, organic-level maintenance support” for the aircraft.
F-35B “Exceptional” Performance, But Parts Lag .....

John A. Tirpak (08/3/2015)

The F-35B turned in “exceptional” performance during a week-long operational readiness inspection last week, but there’s apparently still a parts issue for the jet.
Marine Corps air boss Lt. Gen. Jon Davis, in a statement on Friday’s declaration of initial operating capability with the F-35B, said the ORI was a great success and the jet “performed well in all five IOC operational scenarios: close air support, air interdiction, armed reconnaissance, offensive, [and] defensive counterair. This included live ordnance deliveries.”
The F-35B, “if required, could respond to a contingency,” said Davis, who is deputy commandant for aviation.
However, he also said, “We must remain vigilant in the forging of a sustainment system which supports readiness rates required to train for and conduct sustained combat operations.”
He said, “If I have any concern at this point, it is that the spare parts available to extract maximum value from this exceptional warfighting asset will be shy of what we truly need.”
A Lockheed Martin spokesman said the company is working with the USMC “every day to alleviate this concern.”
Davis also made a pitch to raise the current readiness standards of USMC aviation, which are “between 70 and 75 percent” of full mission capability.
“I think we have that wrong, and I want to see if we can do better with this new platform,” he said.
Where Will Lightning Strike Next? .....

John A. Tirpak (08/3/2015)

After Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121 at MCAS Yuma, Ariz., is fully equipped, the Marine Corps will replace Marine Attack Squadron 211’s AV-8Bs in 2016, and will replace VMFA-122’s F/A-18s in 2018.
The F-35B also will replace the EA-6B Prowler electronic warfare jet, but the Marine Corps did not specify when it would start taking over that airplane’s role.
In the Air Force, initial operational capability with the F-35A is scheduled for one year from now, in August 2016.
USAF must have 12-24 aircraft, plus trained pilots and maintainers, as well as sufficient go-to-war stocks, in order for the head of Air Combat Command to declare IOC.
Hill AFB, Utah, activated the first Air Force squadron on July 21, and the F-35A depot, also at Hill, is already performing that mission.
The Navy is slotted to declare IOC with the carrier-capable F-35C between August 2018 and February 2019.
It will declare with 10 aircraft, plus necessary personnel and parts.
The Marine Corps was first to declare IOC with the F-35B for two reasons.
First, it faced the most urgent need, as its AV-8B Harriers had been extended well past their planned service lives, and second, because the short takeoff/vertical landing aspect of the jet proved troublesome early on, and it received the most attention of the three variants.
IOC Shows F-35 “On Track” .....

John A. Tirpak (08/3/2015)

The Marine Corps’ declaring the F-35 operational shows the program is “on track,” Pentagon acquisition, technology, and logistics chief Frank Kendall said in a statement Friday .....
http://www.defense.gov/Releases/Release ... seID=17420
“This achievement is a testament to the efforts of the F-35 Joint Program Office and industry team,” as well as the Marine Corps, he said.
It’s an “affirmation” the program is doing well and a “reminder that we still have work ahead” to deliver all the planned aircraft to all three user services and international partners “while we continue our successful efforts to drive cost out of the program” Kendall said.
Program Executive Officer Lt. Gen. Chris Bogdan, in his own statement, noted that the Marine Corps declared IOC “at the beginning of the six-month window” that was targeted in May 2013 .....
http://www.jsf.mil/
Bogdan said industry, the SPO, and USMC have been working “hand in hand … to achieve that goal.”
The system is now “in the warfighter’s hands and can be called upon to do its mission,” he added.
The F-35B is the world’s first operational supersonic, short takeoff/vertical landing stealth fighter able to operate from ships and austere bases, Bogdan said.
“It took an entire team effort to deliver the combat capability of the F-35B, and today we’ve done it.”
Contractors Congratulate USMC .....

John A. Tirpak (08/3/2015)

Lockheed Martin, builder of the F-35B, said its newly declared operational status with the Marine Corps “represents a quantum leap in air dominance capability.”
Aside from being the first operational supersonic, stealthy STOVL jet, the F-35B has “the most powerful and comprehensive integrated sensor package of any fighter aircraft in history, to provide unprecedented lethality and survivability,” and has “ushered in a new era in military aviation.”
Engine maker Pratt & Whitney said the on-time IOC declaration is due to “the unyielding commitment and leadership of the marines.”
The ability of the F-35B to operate from practically any location represents a “revolutionary capability” for the service, and Pratt said it will continue to work with the marines to prove the “indispensability” of the F-35B “to our nation's and allies’ security.”

A US Air Force F-35A completed the first successful air-to-air refueling operation from an international tanker recently, joining up and refueling from an Italian Air Force KC-767A flying over California for boom receiver certification tests, Lockheed Martin officials confirmed August 6 .....
https://www.f35.com/news/detail/first-i ... ghtning-ii
The event marked the first tanker not operated by USAF to support air refueling certification trials for the US F-35 test program.
Tail AF-4 carried out the initial flight test on July 29 with an IAF tanker flying from Edwards AFB, Calif., completing some 25 boom contacts and offloading an estimated 16,000 pounds of fuel.
Testing with the IAF tanker is slated to continue at Edwards until the end of August, according to Lockheed Martin officials.
Italy is the first country to participate in refueling certification trials with its own tanker aircraft (the IAF maintains four KC-767A tankers at Pratica di Mare AB, Italy).
The Italians are also purchasing their own F-35s, to replace their fleets of Panavia Tornado, AV-8B, and AMX ground attack aircraft, and the tanker trials will enable them to support multinational operations with other countries flying F-35s.

Gli aggiornamenti ce li facciamo a casa nostra .....
Nellis Completes F-35 Upgrade at Home .....

Arie Church (08/13/2015)

Technicians at Nellis AFB, Nev., have completed an upgrade for the base's first two F-35A fighters, installing the 2B software and avionics package on-site to save time, rather than sending them to a depot-level facility.
The on-site work to the F-35As allow Nellis' F-35s to stay at home and focus on tactics development and training activities as USAF pushes toward initial operational capability for the fleet.
"Having only eight aircraft assigned to our unit, a 25-percent reduction puts the pressure on the maintainers to keep them flying," aircraft maintenance unit production superintendent MSgt. Travis Hoogstraten said in a release Aug. 6 ..... http://www.nellis.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123455352
The 2B package expands the F-35's flight envelope to include supersonic flight and more demanding maneuvers, and improves pilot interface and targeting abilities.
Because of Nellis' role in refining tactics for the F-35 fleet, "upgrading our aircraft to 2B is not only essential to Air Force initial operating capability, but the progression of the joint F-35 program," added Hoogstraten.
Working with Lockheed Martin, the unit managed to complete the first 1B-to-2B upgrade without impacting unit flying rates, in half the time it would have taken to send the aircraft elsewhere, according to the release.
The first upgrade began in May and was finished in early July.

La Marina USA e le ..... ristrettezze di bilancio .....
The US Navy believes budget pressures and competing priorities could drive it to purchase fewer Lockheed Martin F-35Cs per year in the 2020s, and a worst-case scenario could see it procure as few as 12 aircraft per year, or one squadron.
Naval Air Forces commander Vice Adm Mike Shoemaker says the current plan is to purchase around 20 carrier variants per year in the 2020s, but depending on the resources available, annual output could fall to anywhere between 12 and 20 aircraft.

On 12 August the service revealed the timeframe to transition to the JSF, saying the switch from the Harrier to the F-35B will take 11 years with the last aircraft retiring in 2026, “subject to review, assessment and a final decision in 2019”.
Replacing the F/A-18 Hornet will take 15 years, concluding in 2030.
In the interim, the US Navy and USMC are extending the service life of their legacy Hornets from 6,000h to over 9,000h.

“No other airplane can go from fifth to fourth and back to fifth again.
I’m buying pylons for the airplane.
I get the pylons in 3F software, which comes in 2017.
[With the pylons] I can load up an F-35B with about 3,000 pounds more ordnance than I can put on an F-18 right now,” Davis said.
“So I can have an airplane that does fifth-generation stuff for the opening salvo of the fight.
When I have to go to level of effort, I can load the pylons on, load ordnance on there, do level of effort, come back, sail to another part of the world, take the pylons off and go do the fifth-generation thing again.
… It offers us tremendous capability for the Marine Corps that’s going to have one type/model/series aircraft that can go fourth and fifth gen, give us that fighter capability, give us that attack capability that we need in the out years.”

Però ..... c'è la notizia che Israele non desidera che vi siano terzi che mettano le mani sui propri F-35A .....
Israel insists it will undertake the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of its on-order fleet of Lockheed Martin F-35 combat aircraft, going against the airframer’s strategy of creating regional sustainment centres for the Joint Strike Fighter.
"We have made it clear that the maintenance of the aircraft including depot-level [work] will be done in our bases," a senior Israeli air force officer tells Flightglobal.

La Marina USA aveva presentato una richiesta ..... poi ci ha ripensato ..... ovvero ..... gli annessi e connessi dell' intricato sistema dei 'blocchi' di sviluppo .....
The Lockheed Martin F-35 appears to be overcoming many of the software troubles that have dogged the programme since its inception, but the fighter jet’s complexity means that any attempt to squeeze extra capabilities into early software blocks would threaten the wider rollout schedule.
That has been the experience of the US Navy, which asked the joint programme office (JPO) to consider bringing forward delivery of the wide-area search radar function to Block 3F, but then quietly withdrew the request.

La lunga raffica .....
F-35A’s Gun Fires At Full Capacity .....

(08/21/2015)

The Air Force variant of the Joint Strike Fighter fired 181 rounds from its four-barrel, 25-mm Gatling gun this month in a ground test at Edwards AFB, Calif., the Joint Strike Fighter program office announced Aug. 20.
Ground testing started June 9, using a production version of the gun and a target practice round, and is expected to be complete this month.
Airborne gun testing will begin in late September, and the gun will be operational by the end of the system development and demonstration phase in 2017, according to the program office.
The gun is embedded in the left wing of the F-35A and will allow pilots to strafe targets on the ground or in the air.
But because the F-35 is a stealth aircraft, the gun must be hidden behind a door until the trigger is engaged.
Testing is meant to certify that the door opens properly and that the gun can spin up and down correctly.
The Marine Corps declared initial operational capability on its version of the F-35 on July 31; the Air Force expects to declare IOC next fall.

F-35C ..... ad Ottobre nuova serie di prove in mare .....
The US Navy is planning at-sea testing of the carrier variant joint strike fighter in the first few weeks of October aboard the aircraft carrier USS Eisenhower, according to several sources.
The upcoming sea trials will mark the second phase of developmental testing for the Lockheed Martin-made F-35C.
During the test period, the team will evaluate the aircraft’s ability to launch and recover from the carrier, and its performance in suboptimal conditions and during night operations.

Royal Netherlands Air Force F-35A Lightning IIs are flying two weeks of combat trials, testing their interoperability with the RNLAF's F-16s, KDC-10 tanker, and allied aircraft at Edwards AFB, Calif.
The two Dutch F-35s are conducting operational tests to evaluate how the aircraft integrates with current platforms in both offensive and defensive counter-air and ground-attack missions, according to an Aug. 20 Defense Ministry release.
The trials, conducted Aug. 17 to 28, involved six F-16s from the RNLAF's training detachment with the Air National Guard's 162nd Fighter Wing at Tucson, Ariz., as well as six Air Force and British Royal Air Force F-35A/B, according to the release.
The Dutch stood up their first F-35 unit, Number 323 Squadron, last year, specifically to conduct operational testing and evaluation at Edwards.
The Dutch plan is to eventually replace their F-16s with a fleet of 37 F-35As, split between two operational squadrons.
