Il Pentagono ..... smentisce .....
The Pentagon is not conducting a formal review of F-35 planned procurement numbers, a spokesman said Tuesday, despite comments by the incoming chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff that indicate otherwise.
In written testimony for his nomination hearing last month, Gen. Joe Dunford seemed to signal that a review of the total projected buy of the F-35 — 2,443 in total, spread across three models for the Air Force, Marines and Navy — was underway.

E in Russia ..... si corre ai ripari .....
..... the UAV has been designed to detect stealth aircraft in the same vein as China’s ambitious “Divine Eagle” project, which he claims is based on technology “borrowed” from Russia and the USA.
Such aircraft aim to detect low-observable US combat aircraft using X-band and UHF radars, specifically the Lockheed Martin F-22 and F-35 and Northrop Grumman B-2.

Building an F-35 Maintenance Force .....

Brian Everstine (08/28/2015)

The Air Force got enough maintainers in place to meet the initial operating capability deadline for the F-35 by moving A-10s to backup status, transferring some Active Duty maintainers out of association units, contracting one maintenance unit, and converting some airmen to the F-35 from the F-16, USAF spokeswoman Ann Stefanek told Air Force Magazine.
The Air Force previously said it would not have enough airmen to meet the IOC date of August 2016 if it could not proceed with its plan to retire the A-10, but after Congress blocked the bulk of that move in the Fiscal 2015 National Defense Authorization Act, the service was able to move 18 A-10s to backup inventory status, which freed up some maintainers, Stefanek said.
To add more, USAF moved some Active Duty airmen from association units with Guard and Reserve, along with contracting out the 62nd Aircraft Maintenance Unit at Luke AFB, Ariz., and converted F-16 maintainers at Hill AFB, Utah, earlier than planned.
The Air Force plans to meet IOC with the units at Hill.
However, future operational units at Eielson AFB, Alaska, and RAF Lakenheath, England, mean the service will still need more maintainers to meet the 2022 deadline for full operational capability, she noted.

The first F-35 for Norway is in the final stages of production, Lockheed Martin said in a press release .....
https://www.f35.com/news/detail/first-f ... production
The fighter, known as AM-1, left the main F-35 production facility on Aug. 19 and moved to the aircraft final finishes facility for its stealth coating.
It will go through a series of functional fuel system checks and operational ground checks before its first flight, and is slated to be assigned to Luke AFB, Ariz., later this year, as part of the Air Force’s pilot training program for US and international pilots.
AM-1 is the first of four Norwegian F-35s in production at the Lockheed Martin facility in Fort Worth, Texas.
The country first authorized the purchase of a Joint Strike Fighter in 2012, marking the first time in three decades Norway ordered new combat aircraft for its armed forces.

The two Dutch F-35s are conducting operational tests to evaluate how the aircraft integrates with current platforms in both offensive and defensive counter-air and ground-attack missions, according to an Aug. 20 Defense Ministry release.

Two weeks of joint testing of the Lockheed Martin Corp F-35 fighter jet at a California air base by the Royal Netherlands Air Force showed that the new stealthy jets are able to share a significant amount of data with older warplanes, the pilot in charge of Dutch F-35 testing told Reuters.
Colonel Albert De Smit, commander of the Netherlands operational test detachment, said the testing sought to validate that the new fifth-generation F-35s could share useable data with older F-16s and aerial refueling aircraft via the Link 16 system.

Mentre vengono assegnati fondi per l' aggiornamento 'Block 3F' .....
F-35 Block 3F Funds Awarded .....

Marc V. Schanz (09/03/2015)

Lockheed Martin received a $311.4 million contract for the F-35 program’s Block 3F upgrade - the planned all-up configuration - which will be performed on Air Force, Marine Corps, Navy, and British variants of the Joint Strike Fighter, according to a Sept. 1 contract announcement .....
NAVY - Lockheed Martin Corp., Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co., Fort Worth, Texas, is being awarded a not-to-exceed $311,399,980 contract for undefinitized delivery order 5503 against a previously issued basic ordering agreement (N00019-14-G-0020) for the F-35 Lighting II Block 3F upgrade for the Air Force, Marine Corps, Navy, and the government of the United Kingdom.
This order procures retrofit modification hardware necessary for the Block 3F upgrades, as well as engineering tasks supporting modification kit installation.
Work will be performed in Fort Worth, Texas (90 percent); and Baltimore, Maryland (10 percent), and is expected to be completed in September 2021.
Fiscal 2014 aircraft procurement (Marine Corps, and Air Force); fiscal 2015 aircraft procurement (Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force); fiscal 2015 research, development, test and evaluation (Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force); and Joint Strike Fighter Partner funds in the amount of $84,064,987 are being obligated on this award, none of which will expire at the end of the current fiscal year.
This contract combines purchase for the Air Force ($142,699,986; 46 percent); Marine Corps ($86,199,996; 27 percent); Navy ($61,000,000; 20 percent); and the government of the United Kingdom $21,499,998; 7 percent).
The Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, Maryland, is the contracting activity.
The “undefinitized delivery order,” made against another ordering agreement for the four customers, is to purchase “retrofit modification hardware” needed for Block 3F upgrades, and engineering support for kit installations at Lockheed Martin’s Fort Worth, Texas, facility and at a facility in Baltimore, Md. Naval Air Systems Command at NAS Patuxent River, Md., is the contracting authority.
Work on the modifications is expected to last until September 2021.
The contract is a combination purchase for the four customers, with the largest portions going to USAF (approximately $142.7 million of the contract) and the Marine Corps (approximately $86.2 million).
Earlier this year, a senior USAF official noted some capabilities planned for the Block 3F full configuration of the fighter will move to the Block 4 update, which will be fielded between 2019 and 2025.
The Marine Corps declared initial operational capability for its F-35B variant in early August with the 2B software configuration, which provides initial combat capability.
The Air Force will declare IOC with the 3i software in 2016, which provides the same capabilities as the Marine Corps' Block 2B, but includes an upgraded processor and the "gen 3" helmet, F-35 Executive Vice President Lorraine Martin said in June.

“The F-35A Lightning II represents the future of tactical aviation for the United States and our allies,” said Col. David Lyons, 388th FW commander, who delivered one of the aircraft.
"We’re excited to usher in a new era of combat capability for the Air Force.”
Hill is slated to receive a total of 72 F-35As by 2019, becoming the Air Force's first combat coded Lightning II unit when the jets reach initial operational capability, targeted for the latter part of next year.
Hill, which is the fifth Air Force and 10th overall base to receive the Joint Strike Fighter, activated the 34th Fighter Squadron as its first dedicated F-35A squadron earlier this summer, and plans to have at least 15 aircraft there by next summer.
Lorraine Martin, Lockheed Martin’s F-35 program general manager, said the F-35 “provides the USAF and international partners a decisive edge over its adversaries," according to a Lockeed Martin release .....

Lt. Gen. Christopher Bogdan, the program executive officer for the F-35 Lightning II Joint Program Office in Arlington, Va., speaks to airmen and civilian employees who work on the F-35A at Nellis AFB, Nev., Aug. 27, 2015.
(Air Force photo by SSgt. Siuta B. Ika.)

The Air Force’s F-35s need a number of modifications before they are combat ready, but the biggest problem the Joint Strike Fighter program is having is finding ways to get the aircraft modified while still training enough pilots to be ready once initial operational capability is declared, the F-35 program office’s executive officer said Sept. 9.
By 2019, there will be 493 F-35s out in the field, and every single one of them will need modifications, said Lt. Gen. Christopher Bogdan .....
http://www.af.mil/AboutUs/Biographies/D ... ogdan.aspx
Still, the biggest constraint, other than the enormous cost, is the time it takes for the aircraft to get the needed updates, he said.
Speaking at the ComDef conference in Washington, D.C., Bogdan said the F-35 program has moved beyond “slow and steady progress” and is now “rapidly accelerating and growing” as it approaches a “pivot point” between the big development phase and the follow-on development program.
The Air Force is slated to declare IOC by Aug. 1, 2016, Bodgan said.
..... e, nel frattempo, tenta di sfatare qualche mito .....
JSF “Myth Busting” .....

Jennifer Hlad (09/10/2015)

The program executive officer for the F-35 joint program office shot down some “myths” about the Joint Strike Fighter program Sept. 9 during a speech in Washington, D.C.
While most news reports about the program mention cost overruns, the last time the office added money to the development program was in 2010, said Lt. Gen. Christopher Bogdan, who said he hasn’t asked for “a single penny” since then - and doesn’t intend to.
Additionally, he said, while estimating the costs for everything related to the F-35 program for the next 50 years is “a mighty sketchy endeavor,” the program has seen a decrease in the estimated operations and sustainment costs of about 13 percent in the last three years and expects that trend to continue.
Bogdan also addressed reports that the F-35 lost in a dogfight to an F-16, saying that while the F-16 and A-10 are “awesome … they will not survive in the future battle space.”
Those aircraft can’t do some of the missions the F-35 has been designed to do, or what the services want the aircraft to do, he said, using the analogy of an Olympic decathlete racing an Olympic sprinter in the 100-meter dash.
“That’s not what we should measure the F-35 on,” Bogdan said.

Lockheed Martin has announced an improved version of its electro-optical targeting system for the F-35, called Advanced EOTS, just months after the long-delayed fifth-generation fighter was declared fit for combat with the Marine Corps.
The new sensor developed internally by Lockheed is similarly sized and shaped to fit neatly into the same forward undercarriage position on the F-35, and the first prototype is expected next year.

Mentre Northrop Grumman accelera i tempi di produzione .....
Northrop Grumman says it is increasing the production tempo of F-35 centre fuselages, with deliveries to the manufacturer Lockheed Martin quickening from one unit every four work days to one every three.
Once the new schedule is fully implemented, Northrop will have shaved one-and-a-half months off the time it takes to produce the complex piece of military hardware from 11.5 months to 10.

..... dagli Stati Uniti arrivano ulteriori dettagli sullo stato delle operazioni di certificazione degli equipaggi dei KC-767A dell' AMI .....
"Overall, we are pretty satisfied with the campaign since we are nearing the end of full certification. We are really happy to be the first international tanker to be certified with the F-35. This is truly a historic milestone for the Italian Air Force," added De Michele.
With these specific tests, De Michele highlighted the Italian tanker's incorporation of a new concept of refueling, called a remote vision system, which involves boom operators looking through a helmet-mounted display.

Una puntatina a Fallon ..... per vedere come si fa .....
The Navy's sole F-35C squadron made its first trip to the hallowed strike fighter ground here to hone tactical skills and fly for the first time with F/A-18 Hornets.
Strike Fighter Squadron 101's "Grim Reapers" wrapped up two weeks of training with Top Gun fliers at Fallon's Naval Strike Air Warfare Development Center on Friday, the fleet replacement squadron's latest step in putting the F-35C Lightning II through its paces toward its initial operating capability in 2018.

L' USAF si prepara alla IOC del 2016 .....
F-35 IOC Shaping Up .....

John A. Tirpak (09/15/2015)

The Air Force is “green” for initial operational capability with the F-35A next August, Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Harrigian, director of USAF’s F-35’s integration office, told reporters Monday at ASC15.
All 12 to 14 of the F-35As to be delivered to Hill AFB, Utah, between now and next August will be in the 3I software configuration, but there will be at least one more software drop between now and then.
The first two jets, already delivered, are in the 3I.R5 version, but 3I.R6 will be the version at IOC.
Jets needing physical modifications to the IOC standard can be altered on the flightline at Hill without a depot visit, he said.
The squadron will have about 30 pilots and 240 maintainers, all of whom are “on their way.”
There will be some sort of operational readiness drill a couple of months before IOC, during which the unit will be evaluated on its proficiency in “basic” close air support, interdiction, suppression of enemy air defense (SEAD), and destruction of enemy air defenses (DEAD).
Harrigian said that air-to-air capability is included in the SEAD and DEAD missions, as “they fight their way in.”
The drill is “similar” to that the Marine Corps performed just prior to declaring IOC with the F-35B in late July, Harrigian noted.
..... ma il più importante ostacolo da superare sarà quello relativo alla messa a punto del software ALIS .....
Software is Biggest Hurdle for F-35A IOC .....

Jennifer Hlad (09/15/2015)

The biggest challenge on the road to the Air Force declaring F-35 initial operational capability is the delivery of the ALIS (Autonomic Logistics Information System) software, Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Harrigian, director of the Air Force’s F-35 integration office, said Monday at ASC15.
Still, the Air Force isn’t backing off any of the capability requirements for IOC, he said.
The software in the field right now is version 2.0.1, and the Air Force needs 2.0.2 to operationalize the planes and meet IOC requirements, said Leigh Method, Harrison’s deputy and senior advisor.
ALIS, a suite of applications, covers everything from maintenance to training, flying to mission planning, she said.
“It’s the timing of our software for ALIS that we’re most concerned about,” Harrigian said.
“It’s crystal clear what we need for 2.0.2.,” and Lockheed Martin and the joint program office are working to deliver that, he said.
