Fonte ..... "F-35 Makes First Transatlantic Crossing" .....An Italian Air Force F-35 completed the fighter jet’s first transatlantic crossing Friday, a historic event that kicks off a landmark year for the international program.
The aircraft, an Italian Air Force F-35A dubbed AL-1, touched down here Feb. 5 after a seven-hour flight from Lajes Air Base, Portugal.
The plane, which began its journey from Cameri Air Base in Italy, on Tuesday, was scheduled to arrive here on Wednesday, but was delayed due to weather and maintenance issues.

The Air Force hasn’t backed off its goal of buying 1,763 F-35A Joint Strike Fighters, but it will take longer to buy them, Carolyn Gleason, deputy USAF budget director, told reporters at the Pentagon Tuesday .....
http://www.af.mil/AboutUs/Biographies/D ... eason.aspx
Gleason said the Air Force hopes to get to an annual buy of 60 F-35s a year by 2021, with the ramp as follows: 43 in Fiscal 2017, 44 in FY18, 48 in both FY19 and FY20, and 60 in FY21.
The ramp represents a “deferral of 75 F-35s, … four squadrons’ worth,” between Fiscal 2017 and 2021, budget director Maj. Gen. James Martin said at the briefing .....
http://www.af.mil/AboutUs/Biographies/D ... in-jr.aspx
Gleason said USAF doesn’t anticipate a huge uptick in F-35 unit cost because of the slowdown, because foreign partners in the program will take up some of the slack with their own JSF orders.
The deferral of 45 aircraft freed up $4.9 billion for other needs, of which about $3.4 billion will keep the Air Force in the A-10 business, Martin said.
The maintainers that were to transfer from the A-10 to the F-35 will now be replaced by “contractor maintenance,” he explained.
The JSF program director, Lt. Gen. Christopher Bogdan, will explain the effects of the Pentagon’s F-35 changes at a press conference on Wednesday.

To fill the ranks of F-35 maintainers, the Air Force will draw 1,100 airmen from the A-10, F-16, and C-130 fleets, the service said in a news release Friday .....
http://www.af.mil/News/ArticleDisplay/t ... units.aspx
The positions will be back-filled by contractor personnel.
Lt. Gen. John Cooper (http://www.af.mil/AboutUs/Biographies/D ... ooper.aspx), the Air Force’s deputy chief of staff for logistics, engineering and force structure, told the House Armed Services Readiness Subcommittee on Friday that the service is 4,000 maintenance airmen short across the service, and the deficit continues to grow because the service is bringing in two F-35s each month, each of which requires 20 maintainers.
“We have the force structure that we’re not able to divest, and we’re growing F-35s,” he said, referencing legacy aircraft that has been maintained for the fight against ISIS.
Besides asking for more maintenance billets in the fiscal 2017 budget, USAF said it will use re-enlistment bonuses to retain maintainers; invite separated personnel to return to active duty, and other measures including “allowing high year of tenure extensions.”
Aside from the formal training units for the three aircraft types, bases that will be affected include the A-10 Weapons Instructor Course and operational test and evaluation units at Nellis AFB, Nev.; F-16 Aggressor maintenance at Eielson AFB, Alaska, and aerospace ground units at Andersen AFB, Guam; Holloman and Kirtland AFBs, N.M.; Peterson AFB, Colo.; Rota AB, Spain, and avionics units at Eglin AFB and Tyndall AFB in Fla.

With F-35, the picture remains exactly as it was two years ago.
Singapore joined the program as a security cooperation participant in 2003, at the same time and status as Israel.
Despite the latter’s procurement being a far-from-smooth process – Israel’s F-35s have a number of unique subsystems – the first Israeli jet is in production in Fort Worth, Texas.
Singapore is still to confirm an order, or even to announce its preferred F-35 variant.

The RNLAF plans to replace its legacy F-16A/B fleet with a total of 37 F-35s, split between the two bases.
