In visita in Italia ... per esercitazioni ...
The Aviano air base, northern Italy, is currently hosting a record line-up of USAF F-35 stealth fighters.
On 23 and 25 May, two squadrons consisting of six aircraft each from 388th FW and 419th FW at Hill AFB, crossed the Ocean to reach Italy and mark the largest deployment of F-35s in Europe and the first on Italian soil.
The main purpose of the deployment is to allow modern jets to participate in the Astral Knight 2019 (AK19) exercise and train together NATO forces.
AK19 is a U.S. Air Force in Europe led exercise that is taking place at Aviano AFB as well as other locations in Croatia, Germany and Slovenia.
It is an integrated air and missile defense exercise focused on conducting defense of key terrain.

A proposito del velivolo giapponese precipitato in mare ...
A quasi due mesi dall' accaduto ... le ricerche vedranno, a breve, la loro conclusione ...
Tokyo will end its search for the Lockheed Martin F-35A that crashed into the Pacific Ocean off the northeast coast of Japan on 9 April.
Japan's Kyodo news agency has quoted defence minister Takeshi Iwaya as saying that the search will be called off (*).
The report also quotes an unammed defence source as saying that the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) will soon recommence flights with the aircraft, which was grounded after the disaster.

F-35 ... 200.000 ore di volo e 400 esemplari consegnati ...

Immagine
Lockheed Martin and the F-35 Joint Program Office have delivered the 400th F-35 - an F-35A model to Hill AFB, Utah—and surpassed 200,000 flight hours, Lockheed announced June 3.
The 400th aircraft is a “significant milestone,” JPO director Vice Adm. Mat Winter said in a press statement.
“The collaborative efforts across the JPO, US services, partners, and industry remain focused on driving costs down, quality up, and faster delivery timelines across our development, production, and sustainment lines of effort.”
The 400 aircraft break down as follows: 283 F-35As, 87 F-35B short-takeoff and landing versions, and 30 F-35C carrier-based models.

Ancora sotto tiro ... negli USA ...
The continued sustainment problems plaguing both the F-35 program and broader military readiness are a major focus of the House Armed Services readiness subcommittee mark of the 2020 defense policy bill, which calls for limiting acquisition funding until the F-35’s issues are addressed.
The subcommittee’s mark, released June 4, would limit the funding for F-35 acquisition to 75 percent of the authorized amount until a report is submitted detailing the steps being made to improve the availability and accountability of F-35 parts.
The Pentagon is requesting $11.2 billion for F-35 procurement in 2020, up from the authorized $7.6 billion in 2019.
A systemic lack of spare parts has been the driving force of low F-35 readiness, with the aircraft’s full mission capable rate across all services sitting at just 27 percent, the Government Accountability Office states in a recent report.
Older parts are not compatible with newer jets, and a limited number of suppliers have been tasked with producing parts, according to GAO.

Nellis AFB ... ci si sta preparando per gli 'Aggressori' ...
Nellis AFB, Nev., already is busy planning for the reactivation of the 65th Aggressor Squadron, even though it’s not slated to start receiving F-35 strike fighters until early 2022.
“For the Adversary Tactics Group, this is a really big deal for us. Our mission set is to know, teach, and replicate the threat in air, space, and cyberspace. From my vantage point, we’re really good at knowing and teaching the threat, but we have some challenges in the replication area,” Col. Travolis Simmons, commander of the 57th ATG, told Air Force Magazine recently.
“The F-35 is really going to assist in addressing some of those challenges.”

Rosee prospettive ... per LM ...
With the Pentagon wavering over the number of F-35s it wants to buy, Lockheed Martin has turned its gaze on Europe.
The company is bullish on selling the aircraft to America’s European allies.
It believes that by 2030 there will be more than 500 F-35 Lightning II stealth fighters deployed in Europe – more than the number of Eurofighter Typhoons currently in operation worldwide.
“With Finland, Poland and Switzerland evaluating the airplane right now that could be a number that is approaching 700 airplanes by that same timeframe,” says Steve Over, director of F-35 international business development.
“We are in dialogue with almost every free country around the world.”

Turchia, F-35 & S-400 ... siamo ormai all' ultimatum ...
Starting June 12, Turkey will be out of the multinational F-35 program unless it immediately cancels an order for Russian S-400 Triumf air defense systems, the Pentagon said June 7, laying out a series of economic and military steps that would end all of Turkey’s involvement in the program in the next six weeks.
Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan, in a letter to Turkish defense minister Hulusi Akar, said “you still have the option to change course on the S-400,” but if that doesn’t happen, “an orderly cessation of Turkish participation” in the program will begin nearly at once, starting with Turkey’s exclusion from a June 12 CEO roundtable in Brussels, Belgium.

In what is billed as the largest procurement contract in the history of the Department of Defense (DoD), Lockheed Martin and the Pentagon reached a $34 billion “handshake agreement” for hundreds of F-35 Lightning II stealth fighters.
The agreement covers the purchase of 478 F-35 aircraft over low-rate initial production lots 12, 13 and 14.
The Joint Program Office and Lockheed Martin are negotiating on the final details of the contract, which would cover aircraft delivered to the USA, as well as development partners in the Joint Strike Fighter programme and Foreign Military Sales customers.

Emerge una nuova grana ...
At extremely high altitudes, the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps’ versions of the F-35 jet can only fly at supersonic speeds for short bursts of time before there is a risk of structural damage and loss of stealth capability, a problem that may make it impossible for the Navy’s F-35C to conduct supersonic intercepts.
The Defense Department does not intend to field a fix for the problem, which influences not only the F-35’s airframe and the low-observable coating that keeps it stealthy, but also the myriad antennas located on the back of the plane that are currently vulnerable to damage, according to documents exclusively obtained by Defense News.
The F-35 Joint Program Office has classified the issues for the "B" and "C" models as separate category 1 deficiencies, indicating in one document that the problem presents a challenge to accomplishing one of the key missions of the fighter jet. In this scale, category 1 represents the most serious type of deficiency.

Turchia, F-35 & S-400 ...
A quanto pare ... l'eventuale estromissione della Turchia dal programma potrebbe essere meno problematica di quanto si possa temere ...
Lockheed Martin is continuously assessing its F-35 supply chain and eyeing potential alternate vendors, for just such a case as Turkey’s expulsion from the multinational program, company executive vice president for aeronautics Michele Evans said on June 13.
It’s likely the Turkish eviction won’t have much effect on cost or schedule of the program writ large, she said.
Evans, after a pre-Paris Air Show briefing for defense journalists, told Air Force Magazine, “with time, we can adjust” the F-35 supply chain to account for disruptions such as Turkey’s ouster.
“We are always working with our vendors and suppliers, … and looking for the lowest-cost” approach to building the F-35, she said, noting there is a shop at Lockheed whose sole function is to develop production work-arounds in case of an interruption of supply.
“We can’t afford to wait for things like this to happen,” she said.
“We have to be ready with something else” to replace lost vendors.
The Pentagon plans to “unwind” Turkey from the F-35 program by early 2020, a date set by defense acquisition and sustainment chief Ellen Lord last week, although immediate steps have been taken to lock Turkey out of this week’s F-35 CEO meeting.
Turkish pilots and attachés also must disengage from F-35 training and program work by July 31.

F-35 ... ci sarebbero dentro anche i Cinesi ... #-o
A Chinese-owned company is making circuit boards for the top secret next generation F-35 warplanes flown by Britain and the United States, Sky News can reveal.
Exception PCB, a printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturer in Gloucestershire, south west England, produces circuit boards that "control many of the F-35's core capabilities", according to publicity material produced by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD).
This includes "its engines, lighting, fuel and navigation systems", it said.
When asked about the firm's Chinese ownership, the MoD said Exception PCB is an established manufacturer of circuit boards to the defence industry and presents "no risk" to the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter supply chain.
But defence experts, including former defence ministers, expressed concern that a Chinese-owned company is producing any parts for such a classified, British and American fifth generation programme, because of long-standing fears about Chinese espionage and rivalry.

Across the Potomac River from the CEOs’ meeting, a Marine Corps F-35B put on a short flight display near the White House, where Polish President Andrzej Duda was meeting with US President Donald Trump.
Duda’s government has announced plans to buy 32 Joint Strike Fighters.
To showcase the aircraft, the F-35B made high-speed turns and demonstrated slow flight and hovers with its short takeoff/vertical landing system.
Two jets - one that flew the demonstration and a spare - made the trip from Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, S.C., to D.C.
White House Deputy Press Secretary Hogan Gidley said “we appreciate Poland’s plan to purchase this exceptional aircraft and welcome the opportunity for DOD demonstration pilots to showcase the F-35 while logging required training hours.”
Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said June 11 on Twitter that Poland has officially requested the purchase of conventional takeoff F-35As through the US foreign military sales program.
He wrote that Poland will soon “join the elite group of countries using the best” fighter.

Meno furtività ... più autonomia ...
Lockheed Martin is looking at what it would take to give the F-35A Joint Strike Fighter, and by extension Israel's F-35I subvariant, the ability to carry two 600-gallon drop tanks under its wings as part of a larger range-extension study.
This would increase their total fuel capacity by approximately 40 percent, though it would negate the jet's stealth qualities.
It is possible that similar provisions could eventually become available across the entire Joint Strike Fighter family.
Aviation Week was first to report on the details about the proposed plan on June 13, 2019.
Lockheed Martin had originally planned for F-35A to carry 460-gallon underwing drop tanks and the aircraft's inboard stores hardpoints are still plumbed into the jet's fuel system.
However, this requirement subsequently got dropped and the Maryland-headquartered defense giant has never certified any Joint Strike Fighter variant to carry drop tanks of any kind.
The company is also looking at whether an improved version of the stealthy fighter jet's Pratt & Whitney F135 engine could offer additional range.

Il pilota, purtroppo, non avrebbe ascoltato ... :(
Air Force Gen. Paul Selva said recently that the Japanese F-35A Joint Strike Fighter pilot who was killed in an April crash into the Pacific Ocean may not have listened to what his aircraft was telling him.
Japan Air Self-Defense Force officials concluded recently that Maj. Akinori Hosomi probably suffered from spatial disorientation, a condition in which pilots lose their sense of equilibrium, before crashing on April 9, 85 miles east of Misawa Air Base.
"The thing we won't know from the accident investigation is what the pilot tried to do -- if he tried to do anything to recover," Selva, the outgoing vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters at a June 18 Defense Writers Group.
"So, if you have never suffered from spatial disorientation, then describing it away as something you can technically fix is just hard to do."

Cooperazione ...
So far, the aircraft have flown in multiple large-scale exercises, including Exercise Astral Knight in Italy, which marked the first time USAF F-35s have trained with the Italian Air Force.
Walz served as a mission commander for the exercise.
The aircraft flew the same mission set every day, enabling them to work out some kinks on the first day before reaching “overall mission success” most of the rest of the time, he said.
Astral Knight also gave the US and Italy, along with Slovenia and Croatia, a chance to develop a multi-layered defense with command and control out of Aviano AB, Italy.
“The fact that Italy was operating their F-35s in synchronization with US F-35s, we actually learn from each other,” USAFE Deputy Commander Lt. Gen. Steven Basham said in an interview.

Prime missioni operative degli F-35 britannici in Medio Oriente ...
Britain's new F35 fighter jets have been used on operations for the first time, Defence Secretary Penny Mordaunt has revealed.
The first operational sorties were flown on June 16 from RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, targeting the last remnants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil).
The six stealth fighters based in Cyprus have conducted a total of 14 operational sorties over Syria and Iraq following a six-week training deployment in the country from May.
Speaking after sitting in the cockpit of the one of jets, Ms Mordaunt said: "I am very proud that these are now flying in defence and are projecting the UK's national interest. This is a fantastic new aircraft, it is amazing. It's doing so well out here on these operations ... it's a really historic moment."
