Garuda Indonesia: How to win people's trust

An Airbus A330-300 of Garuda Indonesia, the flag carrier of Indonesia.Picture: http://www.wikiwak.com/image/Chappy Hakim
JAKARTA

Thursday, December 17, 2009
INDONESIA'S national flag carrier, Garuda Indonesia, has been able to resume flight to Europe since July 14, 2009. On the other hand, due to continuous efforts to improve its services and countless of successes achieved in the last couple of years, Garuda Indonesia eventually won the 2009 Best of the Best CEO award and the 2009 Dream Corporation award for the transportation category.

However, despite those outstanding achievements and continuous attempts to re-exist in the international stage, some minor accidents, yet very disturbing, have occurred recently.

On Dec 9, 2009, a Garuda Boeing 737-400 with tail no: PK-GWT, failed to take off from Polonia Airport in Medan, North Sumatra, to Jakarta. Unconfirmed reports said that the pilot aborted the take-off due to engine failure.

Before that, on Dec 7, 2009 there was news about the aircraft Boeing 737 Garuda — flight number GA 652 — which hard landed in Denpasar, Bali, and caused further flight delay to Papua.

Not long after that, there was another incident, where a Garuda aircraft whose tyres were left out or fell as the plane took off.

The incident forced the B-737 to return to base.

Some said, within a closed time-frame, there was another incident where engines flame-out has happened from another Garuda B-747.

From all the series of minor incidents, yet very potential to become fatal accidents, there was no official explanation from Garuda Indonesia's office that explains in full detail, comprehensive and final, what was really going on with this national flag carrier which also has been the national pride and the public's sweetheart.

Garuda Indonesia, which formally carries the flag of Republic of Indonesia, actually right now is facing serious problems.

The series of accidents that have occurred, although they were considerably minor incidents, in general happened due to the exposure of weaknesses in the technical aspect of aircraft maintenance.

Luckily all those incidents have been well solved due to the quality of its pilots which at this moment are being well-maintained in terms of its quality requirements.

It seems all of Garuda's pilots are still within the international standard of quality in terms of handling flight emergency procedures.

The pride of Indonesian people towards the country's oldest airlines and the carrier of the nation's symbol should therefore be maintained in an excellent manner.

Serious attention in many aspects related to the development of an airline specifically and the national aviation industry in general, must be preserved at all time.

The leader of an airline organisation, whether its an official government airline or state-owned, should — without compromise — provide the flight safety. And this commitment must be possessed by those who are involved in the aviation business.

There was an incident — a disturbing one — last week, when the official sport contingent which includes athletes, trainers and officials that represent the country and their nation in the 25th SEA Games departed to Laos using an airline which was not Garuda Indonesia!

It feels that there was no pride within the soul of our boys who were in the middle of a struggle that requires the support from the thunderous feeling of patriotism to fight in the sports arena.

In fact, they flew with an airplane which was not "Garuda the Flag Carrier", the real bearer of the Red and White!

A development which gives the sense that Garuda Indonesia, at this very moment is no longer "the best airline" in Indonesia. Garuda Indonesia has been conquered by its rivals in its own home.

If it's explored more deeply, there are really no reasons at all for any causes that can make Garuda Indonesia to be the lowest. There are no reasons at all for Garuda to be defeated by local rivals in its own home, except, if the authority and the people lack focus on and faith in their own flag carrier.

Too bad, because until this very moment, based on my observation, it is only Garuda that has the organisational structure and working mechanism and the capacity that closely meets "international flight safety requirements".

To have reached a level that Garuda Indonesia has now reached is indeed very hard to achieve, considering the complexity of an airline management system which must always promote safety, instead of seeking short-term profits just like retail businesses.

The writer, an aviation safety observer, is a retired air chief marshal and former chairman of the National Team for the Evaluation of Transportation Safety and Security.

Garuda to resume more flights to Europe in 2011 - ROME

Monday, 21 December 2009 at 13:19
Garuda Indonesia plans to resume more flights to Europe in 2011, after it receives the first of its Boeing 777-300ERs.

It will start non-stop flights from Jakarta to Frankfurt, Rome, Paris and London, says an airline spokesman.

Garuda already plans to begin a daily service from Jakarta to Amsterdam via Dubai from 1 June 2010.

"We will operate this route on an Airbus A330, but when we get our Boeing 777-300ERs, we will fly non-stop to Amsterdam," says the spokesman.

Services to the other European cities will also be operated on the 777s, he adds. Garuda has 10 777-300ERs on order.

The airline suspended services to Frankfurt and London in 2002 and suspended service to Amsterdam in 2004 owing to weak demand.

However, Garuda now wants to expand its network as part of a plan to raise its profile as an international carrier.

GARUDA INDONESIA IS OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED AS A 4-STAR AIRLINE IN THE LATEST SKYTRAX AIRLINE RANKING REVIEW FOR 2010

LONDON, UK - 29th December 2009

SKYTRAX Research today confirmed that Garuda Indonesia has been Certified as a world 4-Star Airline for the 2010 ranking period.

Commenting on the 4-Star Certification for Garuda Indonesia, Edward Plaisted (Skytrax CEO) said .... "this 4-Star Airline Certification is a coveted seal Quality Approval that an airline receives in recognition of its front-line Product and Service quality. Garuda Indonesia has undergone a major quality transformation and improvement during the past year, across both their product and front-line service standards. New aircraft with a high-end product are now joining their fleet, and the retrofitting of their A330-300 aircraft was the catalyst that really enabled us to upgrade their rating level to a 4-Star airline status."

Garuda Indonesia is now one of just 27 airlines worldwide that currently meet the rigorous quality criteria which Skytrax set for this 4-Star airline ranking.

The official 4-Star airlines ranking is due recognition for those airlines providing a good standard of Product across all travel categories, combining with a good standard of Staff Service delivery.

The airline Star ranking assesses Quality levels across both the Onboard and Airport environments - for Garuda Indonesia the airport ranking reflects their home base of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta.

"This is an outstanding achievement for Garuda Indonesia, and they have demonstrated real commitment to achieving Quality improvement across their customer facing product items and staff service. The airline has adopted the marketing slogan of the new "Garuda Indonesia Experience", based around warm Indonesian Hospitality with quality service that emphasises safety and comfort, and this is certainly something that we now see being delivered to Garuda Indonesia customers" added Mr Plaisted.

Onboard visas for Garuda’s Amsterdam service

Messaggio da Flyingblueboy »

Vi riporto un articolo molto interessante, che dimostra, a mio parere, quanto Garuda stia prendendo seriamente il ritorno in Europa. Enjoy!

26 March, 2010 - Onboard visas for Garuda’s Amsterdam service

JAKARTA - Garuda Indonesia will introduce an ‘Immigration on-Board’ service on the new Amsterdam-Dubai-Jakarta route starting June 2

This initiative will allow passengers entering Indonesia to have their travel documents processed on-board, eliminating the need to queue at immigration counters upon arrival.

Passengers will be able to purchase ‘Visa on Arrival’ vouchers available at Garuda Indonesia check-in counters at both airports.

During the flight, immigration officers on the aircraft will conduct passport checks and issue ‘Visa on Arrival’ and a card that must be returned to ground immigration officers before exiting the airport.

The visa-in-the-air system was introduced on the Tokyo – Denpasar – Jakarta route in February.

Garuda said with the introduction of immigration-on-board, foreign travellers could save up to two hours during peak times and enjoy hassle-free travel, without having to wait at long queues at immigration counters.

Said Emirsyah Satar, president and CEO of Garuda Indonesia, “Europe is an integral part of our ‘Quantum leap’ strategy where we are looking to grow our international network by more than 300 percent to 1,222 flights a week by 2014."

Amsterdam will be the first of a number of European cities such as Frankfurt, Paris, London and Rome, the airline will add to its global network over the next few years.

Garuda Indonesia to sign on as Skyteam member

Garuda Indonesia has confirmed that it intends to join the SkyTeam airline alliance. Today, it will sign on officially with the group and discuss the processes leading up to full membership.

Skyteam has recently strengthened its presence in Asia, adding its first Southeast Asian carrier, Vietnam Airlines. Taiwan's China Airlines will come onboard in 2011. It is also looking at places such as Latin America, India and more of the Asia-Pacific to find members "to further better meet demand of our customers," said Skyteam chairman Leo van Wijk.

Garuda's participation will add approximately 30 destinations throughout the Indonesian archipelago to the SkyTeam network that currently comprises 13 airlines, including Air France, China Southern Airlines, Delta Air Lines, KLM and Korean Airlines, and connects to 841 destinations in 162 countries.

Garuda Indonesia flies to six new destinations in Europe and the Middle East
Friday, 7 December 2012
Garuda Indonesia’s newest flight services to six destinations are a realization of the airline’s code sharing agreement with Etihad Airways,a carrier of the United Arab Emirates.

Following a code sharing agreement with United Arab Emirates’ carrier, Etihad Airways, on Sunday, December 2, 2012, Garuda Indonesia opened new services to six international destinations in Europe and the Middle East that are served by Etihad, namely London, Paris, Manchester, Moscow, Athens, and Muscat, via Garuda’s Abu Dhabi hub.

Garuda Indonesia also officially moved its international hub from Dubai (DXB) to Abu Dhabi (AUH) as part of efforts to expand its network and improve services towards its customers. The Abu Dhabi hub will facilitate Garuda in its code-sharing operations with Etihad in the western outbounds.

Garuda’s inaguration flight from the Abu Dhabi hub, on Sunday, 2 December, served the Jakarta (CGK) - Amsterdam (AMS) route. GA 088 departed from Jakarta at 19.35 LT and arrived in Abu Dhabi on Monday, 3 December at 00.55 LT for a transit stop. The flight later left Abu Dhabi at 02.55 LT for Amsterdam arriving at the Dutch capital at 07.20 LT.

The AMS-CGK route is served by GA 089, which departed from Amsterdam on Monday, 3 December at 10.10 LT and arrived in Abu Dhabi at 19.45. GA 089 departed from Abu Dhabi at 21.15 LT and arrived in Jakarta at 08.25 LT.

Garuda Indonesia flies via Abu Dhabi from Jakarta to Amsterdam four times a week, every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday at 19.35 LT using a 222 passenger capacity Airbus 330-200, with a seating configuration of 36 passengers in Executive class and 186 passengers in Economy class.

PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk. President & CEO Emirsyah Satar said the decision to move the hub is propelled by the desire to raise the quality of service towards customers, in continuation of the codeshare agreement signed with Etihad Airways on October 18, 2011 and which has been in effect sin since 28 October 2011.
The opening of the Abu Dhabi hub will facilitate passengers who wish to travel to more than 80 destinations served by Etihad Airways in 50 cities in Europe, North America, the Middle East dan Africa,” he added.
As partner, Garuda Indonesia will support Etihad Airways’ network development in the eastern regions, while Etihad Airways will endorse Garuda Indonesia’s expansion in the western outbounds, namely destinations beyond Abu Dhabi.
The codeshare agreement covers several aspects , such as “passenger codeshare, cargo co-operation, airport service improvement, Engineering/Maintenance, Lounge and “Frequent Flyer Program”. This commercial agreement is part of Garuda Indonesia’s “Quantum Leap 2011–2015” network expansion program.
In this cooperation, Garuda Indonesia will act as “marketing party”, selling Etihad Airways’ tickets for more than 27 destinations in Europe, North America, the Middle East and Africa. The cities are: Paris, London, Frankfurt, Milan, Munich, Manchester, Dublin, Dusseldorf, Geneva, Brussels, and Athens in Europe; New York, Toronto, Chicago in the North American region, Domodevo in Russia, Cairo, Johannesburg and Nairobi in Africa; and Jeddah, Muscat, Dammam, Riyadh, Amman, Istanbul, Bahrain, Kuwait and Beirut in the Middle East.
Thanks to this cooperation Etihad Airways passengers will be connected with Garuda Indonesia’s network of services across the Indonesian archipelago, Asia, Australia and Japan. Etihad Airways will also serve as a “marketing party” and will be able to sell Garuda Indonesia tickets on the following routes: Jakarta - Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta – Abu Dhabi, and to major cities in Indonesia, such as Surabaya, Denpasar, Manado, Makassar and Balikpapan (from Jakarta).
