http://www.aviationweek.com/Article.asp ... 470896.xmlThe first two operators of the Boeing 787-8 are seeing better-than-anticipated fuel burn, despite prior expectations of below-par performance as a result of data from predelivery flight tests.
The numbers, though based on early experience with a relatively small fleet on a variety of routes, are surprisingly positive given the early configuration of the airframes and engines. The operators have not yet incorporated all the planned weight and fuel burn improvements of follow-on production versions.
Four of the current active 787 fleet are from an early production block in which each is thought to be around 8,800 lb. over specification weight, while the remainder are lighter aircraft built from the block point change introduced from line No. 34.
[...]
ANA earlier this month was the first to reveal that its aircraft were producing around 21% lower fuel burn on international flights compared to the 767-300ER that the 787 is designed to replace.
[...]
After its first six months of service, ANA says the 787 efficiency levels are slightly up on the 20% savings originally expected at the beginning of the program. On domestic routes, the saving is 15-20%, which meets expectations, say ANA officials.

No related problems have arisen on our 787s, however we have ascertained that the part at issue is fitted to five of our aircraft," says an ANA spokesman.
It is understood that the issue was first discovered on an engine gear box used for endurance testing on the ground. Some crown gears had shown corrosion, leading to damage to the gear box.
http://www.aviationweek.com/Article.asp ... 479111.xmlAll Nippon Airways has returned to service two of the five Boeing 787s that have been grounded while an engine repair is carried out, although three more 787s will remain out of action for several days. However, network disruption has been minimal, as other aircraft have been used to fly the 787 routes.
The three 787s will “need another few weeks to fix” the engine issue that prompted the aircraft to be removed from service on July 21, an ANA spokesman says. So far there have only been two domestic flights canceled, both on July 21.
Boeing informed ANA that “there may be an issue with the gearbox” in the Trent 1000 engines on its 787s, the airline spokesman says. While ANA stresses that “no related problems have arisen” in its 787 fleet, it found that the part identified by Boeing is fitted on five of its 11 787s. The other six aircraft are “not affected by this issue” and are continuing to operate as normal, the airline says. Rolls-Royce reportedly recommended the gearbox part be replaced as a proactive measure.
Japan Airlines’ 787s have not been affected, as they have the GEnx engines rather than the Trent 1000.

http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articl ... ba-375615/Ethiopian Airlines' first Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner landed today at Addis Ababa Bole international airport after its first revenue flight from Washington Dulles.
The aircraft, registration ET-AOQ and operating flight 2501, touched down in rainy weather at 09:04 local time as hundreds of staff members from the airline stood waiting on the airport's tarmac. More than 60 passengers, including the airline's chief executive Tewolde Gebremariam, were on board.
Ethiopian took delivery of the aircraft from Boeing in Everett, Washington, on 14 August before flying it to Washington the next day. The aircraft departed the US capital on 16 August at 13:14 as a revenue flight, following its regularly scheduled daily flight between Washington Dulles and Addis Ababa which was operated by a Boeing 777.
The Star Alliance carrier, which has ordered 10 787s, is the third airline to take delivery of the aircraft after Japan's All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines. Hailing the moment as historic, Gebremariam says being the third carrier to fly the 787 is testament to Ethiopian's standing in the aviation industry.
Ethiopian has secured $1 billion of financing guaranteed by JP Morgan for the 10 787s, with the US Export-Import Bank providing the loans that cover 85% of the aircraft cost. The balance will be financed by a group of financial institutions including ING Capital, the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund, The Netherlands Development Finance Company, the ICF Debt Pool, and from its own balance sheet.
"With uncertainty in the aircraft financing market about a potential funding gap and tightening credit conditions, JP Morgan's $1 billion aircraft financing is testimony to our trusted relationship with Ethiopian Airlines and the strength and capacity of our trade finance capabilities," says Jeremy Shaw, head of trade finance business for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at JP Morgan.
The airline will operate the aircraft on a sightseeing flight around Mount Kilimanjaro on 18 August, before flying it to various destinations in Africa, Europe and the Middle East from 19 August.
Gebremariam said previously that Ethiopian will use the aircraft on its Addis Ababa to Washington Dulles flight after it accepts its second 787 in September. The airline will alternate the two 787s with a a 777 that currently operates on the route. The airline will take delivery of its third 787 in October and fourth in November, after which it will begin flights to Guangzhou with the aircraft.

Houston – Amsterdam 04DEC12 – 29MAR13 Daily
http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articl ... rs-375734/Qantas has cancelled an order for 35 Boeing 787-9 aircraft to reduce capital expenditure.
Deliveries of 15 787-8s to Jetstar, its low-cost subsidiary, will continue as planned, adds Australia's flag carrier.
The 787-8s will allow the transfer of Airbus A330s from Jetstar to Qantas Domestic, and the eventual retirement of Qantas's Boeing 767 fleet.
The group will retain and bring forward 50 787-9 options and purchase rights by two years, with the aircraft available for delivery from 2016 if needed.
E intanto, ieri, LAN (LaTAM?) ha ricevuto il suo primo 787Pop Quiz: How Many Dreamliners Does Boeing Have To Deliver To Turn a Profit?
If you can remember back that far, Boeing’s (BA) 787 Dreamliner started as a much-celebrated advance, a wide-body, fuel-efficient jet. Unfortunately, the program has been awfully slow going.
The Dreamliner was supposed to start flying in 2007, but delays have become the norm and have created opportunity for airlines to cancel their orders. Most recently, Qantas Airways cancelled an order for 35 of the planes.
Boeing seems to be moving forward. The first model was delivered to All Nippon Airways and stayed flying last fall. This summer, United (UAL) threw a web party when Boeing finally rolled the first Dreamliner out of the paint hangar.
But customers originally placed more than 1,000 orders and have cancelled 217 of those. Boeing’s total orders now: 824. And every delay and cancelled order means it takes longer for Boeing to turn a profit. According to the Wall Street Journal, Boeing needs to ship 1,100 of the planes in order to break even.
Sheesh, this could take a while.
