Quoting The Oregonian, 14 Nov:

American Airlines is offering coach passengers on selected routes the option of renting a $10 to $12 "personal entertainment device" programmed with movies that have finished their first run but have not yet been released on DVD, video or television. It also offers digital versions of newspapers, audio book excerpts and music. The service is free in first class.

Ned Raynolds, an American spokesman, said that the devices were distributed by flight attendants and activated by swiping a credit card, but that they must be connected to a special machine to be recharged (reducing the temptation to carry one off the plane).

The routes for the trial include New York/LGA to Fort Lauderdale and New York/JFK to San Diego. All tests are on American's MD-80 aircraft, which do not offer in-flight entertainment.
