Farnborough beckons for Italian UAV display team

While the Boeing 787 and 747-8 appear set to be the commercial showpiece of July’s Farnborough Air Show, military eyes are likely to be drawn to the Italian unmanned formation display team intending to debut at this year’s event.

Farnborough 2010 organisers have yet to give final authorisation for the Foggia-based ‘Squadriglia Tranquilla’ (‘Quiet Squadron’) to participate, but Flightglobal understands that approval is likely to be granted this month.

The nine Alenia Aeronautica Sky-X UAVs have been heavily modified, mainly to reduce fuel and maintenance costs. All of the expensive surveillance equipment used during military operations has been removed, leaving relatively simple pre-programmed on-board guidance. Each Sky-X has also been fitted with a smoke canister.

Although the nine UAVs are completely autonomous in the air, a ground team of seven ‘ghost pilots’ is collectively responsible for devising the display and ensuring each aircraft’s guidance computer has the correct instructions uploaded before flight.

“All of the aircraft individually receive a pre-determined course and GPS tracking means it is a simple matter to program them to fly together,” says the team’s manager, Maggiore Antonio ‘Pesce’ da Prile.

This method of guidance – and the safety limits of the air show – means that the aircraft have a limited repertoire, but are able to fly in various tight formations and even carry out manoeuvres inverted. Two of the UAVs will perform a ‘synchro-pair’ crossover similar to that perfected by the Royal Air Force’s Red Arrows.

“We’re not as fast as the Red Arrows yet,” admits da Prile but, referring to the name of the team, adds: “We are much quieter.

“We wanted to call ourselves ‘No Angels’, because we’re just like the [US Navy] Blue Angels, but with no-one in the cockpit. But I understand this name was already taken by a girl band.”

Il sito web del noto settimanale aerospaziale britannico "Flight International" ha colpito quest'anno, in maniera simpatica, il principale simbolo dell'Aeronautica Militare, le "Frecce Tricolori", mettendo al loro posto una futuristica, quanto fantomatica, pattuglia acrobatica senza piloti.

L'annuncio dato alcune ora fa da un sito aeronautico inglese, relativo alla costituzione di una pattuglia acrobatica italiana formata esclusivamente da aerei senza pilota, ha mandato su tutte le furie il Ministro della Difesa On. Ignazio La Russa in quanto la notizia sarebbe dovuta rimanere strettamente riservata sino all'inaugurazione del prossimo salone aerospaziale di Farnborough, in occasione del quale l'esistenza dello straordinario team sarebbe stata rivelata.
Il Maggiore Antonio "Pesce" Da Prile, responsabile del reparto non più segreto, è stato immediatamente rimosso dall'incarico e trasferito a nuova destinazione, si presume in Afghanistan.

Farnborough International gets backing to fly UAVs at July show

Unmanned aircraft systems should participate in the daily flying display at the Farnborough air show for the first time this year, after the event’s organisers reached an in-principle agreement with the UK Civil Aviation Authority and the site’s owners.

Farnborough International chief executive Shaun Ormrod says “extensive consultation with customers has clearly indicated that a UAS display must become an integral part of future air shows.”

The show organiser says the newly secured agreement is the result of “lengthy discussions”, and covers guidelines for both indoor and outdoor flight activities with unmanned air vehicles.

“It is likely that a dedicated 30min UAS display will take place prior to the start of the flying display,” the company says. However, this could potentially be extended to 1h, “depending on the level of customer uptake.”

“We expect a good number of customers to take up this opportunity,” says Rod Dean, the show’s director of flight operations.

C'è da temere che, prima o poi, pattuglie acrobatiche formate da velivoli senza pilota "allieteranno" per davvero le manifestazioni aeree .....
..... e a me la cosa non piace per niente ..... ma è solo un'opinione personale .....
