Lufthansa to buy Airbus jets worth 4.3 billion dollars

PARIS, Sept 22, 2010 (AFP) - German airline Lufthansa has approved the purchase of 40 Airbus aircraft worth around 4.3 billion dollars (3.2 billion euros), the European aerospace giant said in a statement on Wednesday.

"Lufthansa's supervisory board has approved the acquisition of 40 Airbus aircraft worth approximately 4.3 billion dollars," it said.

The planes are to be used by Lufthansa -- Europe's biggest airline -- as well as its Swiss and Germanwings subsidiaries.

The company said that with the order Lufthansa, its biggest airline customer, will have acquired a combined total of 410 Airbus aircraft. The new order consists of 24 A320 planes, eight A330-300s, and eight A319s.

In addition to Swiss and regional German carrier Germanwings, the Lufthansa group includes Austrian Airlines, BMI and Brussels Airlines.

Business picked up for Lufthansa as the airline sector rebounds from the global economic slump and the eruption of an Icelandic volcano in April, but low cost carriers have eaten into the German giant's European market share.

In ogni caso i 319 sono per germanwings (con cui da oggi si possono anche accumulare miglia M&M!!) e i 320 per Swiss (mix 320-321)
