The Air Force's final F-22 Raptor—tail number 4195—conducted its first test flight in Marietta, Ga., this week, announced manufacturer Lockheed Martin.
Company test pilot Bret Luedke flew the aircraft during Wednesday's sortie.
This aircraft—the last of 187 production F-22s built on the company's Marietta assembly line—is slated to complete flight tests by the end of May.
At that point, the company will formally deliver it to the Air Force, which plans to assign it to the 3rd Wing at JB Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska.
Raptor 4195 rolled off of the assembly line in mid December, some 15 years after the first F-22.

I am the eagle, I live in high country
In rocky cathedrals that reach to the sky
I am the hawk and there's blood on my feathers
But time is still turning they soon will be dry
And all of those who see me, all who believe in me
Share in the freedom I feel when I fly.
Come dance with the west wind and touch on the mountain tops
Sail o'er the canyons and up to the stars
And reach for the heavens and hope for the future
And all that we can be and not what we are.

False economies
By Rebecca Springate on April 3, 2012 (3:36 PM)
Terminating the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor programme after 187 production examples was shortsighted and irresponsible.
The USA spent some $70 billion on a fighter that will have no true rival for decades - but that investment was squandered amid an ideological debate over the changing nature of warfare.
Ultimately, the view that future enemies will be bands of guerrillas or poorly armed despots won over the mantra of being prepared for high-end peer-level threats.
Instead of 750 jets, the US Air Force was allowed to buy barely enough F-22s for six squadrons, while training and test units go neglected.
More astonishing is that production was only ended just as the programme was entering into full-rate production, so the costs sunk into it were never recouped through relatively low-cost high-volume production, which would also have yielded a more robust fleet.
The USA's strategic shift towards the Pacific and China signals that a world without peer-level threats was a fantasy.
Against high-end threats, a fighter with the stealth, sensors and kinematics to defeat the most potent of anti-access threats is invaluable.
The Raptor is that fighter, designed to "kick down the door" by annihilating enemy air and ground-based defences.
Threats include surveillance radars networked with a new generation of integrated air defence systems, which pose a lethal threat to non-stealthy fourth-generation fighters such as the Lockheed F-16 or Boeing F-15 and F/A-18.
These systems include the Russian-built S-300, S-400 and S-500 surface-to-air missile systems and Chinese copies.
The S-400 system is reputedly able to engage aerial targets from as far away as 400km, and the new S-500 able to shoot down aircraft 600km away.
In development are Russian and Chinese fighters that are superior to existing Western fourth-generation designs, including Sukhoi's PAK-FA and potentially Chengdu's J-20.
Other fighters such as Sukhoi's Su-30 and Su-35 variants of the Flanker and Chengdu's J-10 can match current-generation US fighters.
While superior pilot training gives US pilots an edge, it cannot assure air dominance.
And although the F-35 is a very capable aircraft with its stealth and powerful integrated sensors and avionics, it does not afford the same level of assured dominance that the Raptor does.
If the F-35 is not flown correctly with tactics that play to its strengths, it can be easy to lose.
The F-22 affords such a gross advantage that it can compensate for errors - so its pilots hold all the cards.

The 1st Fighter Wing at JB Langley-Eustis, Va., received its final F-22 Raptor, leaving only JB Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, that has yet to fill its full Raptor complement.
Aircraft 4194 arrived at Langley-Eustis on April 27, completing the base's F-22 force at 46 aircraft, said service officials.
The Air Force is scheduled to take delivery of aircraft 4195, its final F-22, on May 2 at Lockheed Martin's production facility in Marietta, Ga., before its flight to Elmendorf-Richardson for beddown, according to the officials.
The momentous deliveries come as uncertainties still loom (1) regarding the fifth generation aircraft's onboard oxygen supply.
Air Force leaders maintain that the F-22 is safe to fly.
Still, Air Combat Command boss Gen. Mike Hostage told reporters at Langley-Eustis on April 30 that a "very small" number of F-22 pilots have asked for reassignment until the problem is resolved.
He did not provide any additional details, according to media reports.
"Obviously, it's a very sensitive thing because we are trying to ensure that the community fully understands all that we're doing to try to get to a solution," stated Hostage reported (2) ABC News.

Order Completed
Lockheed Martin delivered the 187th F-22 production aircraft to the Air Force during a May 2 ceremony at the company's manufacturing plant in Marietta, Ga.
Handover of Raptor 4195 completed the Air Force's order for the nation's first fifth generation fighter.
"The very existence of this airplane—your airplane—has altered the strategic landscape forever," said Robert Stevens, Lockheed Martin board chairman and CEO, to the Raptor workforce gathered for the event.
Advanced weapon systems like the F-22 will "help shape the future security environment and not just respond to it," said Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz at the ceremony.
Air superiority will remain the F-22's primary mission, but "it clearly will play a starring role" in the nation's new defense strategy that emphasizes deterring and defeating aggressors and projecting power into contested areas, said Schwartz.
He noted testing this year in which an F-22 retargeted a submarine-launched Tomahawk cruise missile in flight as an example of its enhanced joint interoperability.
Schwartz thanked the Raptor workforce.
"Your remarkable efforts will make very important contributions to our national security . . . for many, many years to come," he said.
Raptor 4195 is scheduled to join the 3rd Wing at JB Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, on May 4, a base spokesman told the Daily Report.

(*) .... http://www.gao.gov/products/GAO-12-447GAO Scrutinizes F-22 Modernization Plan
While the F-22 Raptor line is now silent, the Air Force's sole operational fifth generation fighter has $11.7 billion in modernization and improvements booked through 2017, state Government Accountability Office auditors in a report (*) issued May 2.
The cost of modernization has grown from $5.4 billion to the current $11.7 billion, as the content, scope, and phasing of planned improvements have shifted over time, they note.
Oversight of the program's cost and schedule is "hampered by a management structure that does not track and account for the full cost of specific capability increments," they write.
Major challenges will confront Raptor modernization in the coming years, they contend.
Most notably will be the task of developing, testing, and integrating new hardware and software, while at the same time undertaking improvements in aircraft reliability and maintainability to reduce operating and sustainment costs, they state.
GAO recommends that the Defense Department evaluates whether it makes sense to establish some F-22 modernization activities as separate major acquisition programs.
DOD concurred with that suggestion, according to the report.
