Accident: Smartlynx A320 at Tallinn on Feb 28th 2018, runway excursion after bad touch and go
A Smartlynx Estonia Airbus A320-200, registration ES-SAN performing training flights MYX-9001 from Tallinn to Tallinn (Estonia) with 7 crew, was doing touch and gos at Tallinn's runway 08. After about a dozen touch and gos the aircraft the aircraft touched down on runway 08 at 17:03L (15:03Z), accelerated again, lifted off but could not climb out touching down again very hard with sparks and flames visible and became airborne again, the transponder obviously failed upon the hard touch down. The crew declared emergency, positioned for a landing and touched down on runway 26 at about 17:11L (15:11Z) when a loud bang was heard and the aircraft veered left off the runway leaving some parts behind on the runway and came to a stop at position N59.4129 E24.8526 about 830 meters/2700 feet past the runway 26 threshold. Two occupants received minor injuries, the aircraft sustained substantial damage.
The airline reported a technical problem on landing on the training flight with 7 crew (two pilots, four trainees and one inspector).
According to information The Aviation Herald received the last touch and go went wrong with the aircraft hitting the runway a second time very hard. The aircraft had the nose gear rotated by 90 degrees and sustained damage to nose gear and both engines.
Estonia's Ohutusjuurdluse Keskus (OJK, Estonia's accident investigation board) reported the aircraft had departed at 12:03L for a training flight to practise approaches and landings with 7 people on board, at 17:04L the aircraft approached runway 08 for another touch and go, the aircraft could not climb out and collided with the runway, subsequently managed to become airborne again, performed a left turn and landed on runway 26 veering off the runway. One of the main gear doors was found near the village Tuulevaelja about 3.5nm southeast of the runway 08 end. Two occupants received minor injuries (concussions). The occurrence was rated an accident.
The transponder stopped transmitting data after the hard touchdown on runway 08, the climb and landing after the botched touch and go is thus not recorded via ADS-B data.
On Mar 14th 2018 the OJK added that there was an captain instructor, a first officer, four trainees and a Civil Aviation Inspector on board of the aircraft. According to information collected so far the aircraft was not able to climb out after a touch and go at 17:04L, the aircraft did not respond to any inputs, lost height and collided with the runway causing both engines to strike the runway surface, the gear doors were damaged. Following this impact the aircraft was able to become airborne and gain altitude, the crew stabilized the aircraft and turned to return to the airport, after the turn had been completed both engines lost power. The aircraft touched down about 150 meters short of runway 26 at 17:11L, burst all tyres and went off the runway coming to a stop about 15 meters south of the runway. The instructor and one of the trainees received minor injuries in the accident.
Non proprio un bell'inizio per i ragazzi in addestramento
