Dubai leasing firm cancels 35 Boeing orders
DAE Capital of Dubai has canceled orders for 35 Boeing 737 jets, valued at about $1.6 billion after discounts.
Boeing said Thursday that jet leasing company DAE Capital of Dubai has canceled orders for 35 single-aisle 737
jets. At list prices, the cancellation wipes $2.8 billion off the order book. But according to market data from aircraft
valuation firm Avitas, the true value of those airplanes after standard discounts is about $1.6 billion. The
cancellation is not a surprise. DAE Capital has canceled, in stages, most of two huge orders it placed in 2007 for
100 planes each from Airbus and Boeing. Last week, it canceled the last of its Airbus order. DAE Capital still
retains orders with Boeing for 15 747-8 freighters and six large 777 jets. The leasing company was one unit of an
ambitious project called Dubai Aerospace Enterprises, which aimed to quickly grow Dubai's aviation sector beyond
the giant airline Emirates. To manage the company, Dubai hired a group of seasoned airplane leasing executives
from the Seattle area, led by chief executive Bob Genise, who had earlier run Bellevue-based aircraft lessor
Boullioun Aviation Services. But the financial crisis of 2008 slammed Dubai's over-heated real estate market and
sank the investments of the backers of DAE Capital. With its once-lavish financial resources suddenly severely
limited, the lessor has shrunk ever since. Genise and his team left the company last month. Apart from the 35
cancelations, Boeing also announced Thursday two new orders one 737 and one 747-8 going to two unidentified
private VIP customers. Boeing's net sales tally so far this year, following a total of 94 cancellations, now stands at
138 airplanes. As of June 30, Airbus had a net total for the year of 640 airplanes.
